Question on the 25-5?
Did this model always come with full target features or were the stock, trigger, hammer and RR/WO optional?

25-5
The DeKalb County PD used model 25-5's for a short period of time. Those guns had the standard trigger and as I recall, the standard hammer.
The story I heard was that a member of the PD or Sheriff's office was an ex-Border Patrolman and instigated the purchase of them. There was an incident or two where the .45 Colt cartridge did not perform as expected. Could be totally false, just what I heard. Dean

The M25-5s always came with all target options including white outline rear sight. Also included was a mahogany presentation case. Not the same thing for the M25-2.

The 25-5 was produced circa 1978-1988.
All the product codes I find for Model 25-5's in .45 Colt in those years list TS, TT, TH, and in addition all list sights as RR, WO. Based on what I've seen, what I recall, and what I can find I would say they all came standard with full target features.

I have a 25-5 that shipped to the Georgia Dept of Public Safety and came from a Captain on the DeKalb County PD. It is . . . as 41fan described . . . equipped with standard hammer and trigger but did ship with RR/WO and target stocks. I'm going to assume they were special ordered in that configuration.
Over the years I have owned four other 4" pinned barrel Model 25-5s . . . all with full target options and all with oversize cylinder throats. This is the only example I've owned or seen with standard hammer and trigger and .451" - .452" throats. It is reported the Captain returned it to the factory and a replacement cylinder was fitted.

Being from Georgia, is it possible your example also came from the DeKalb County PD batch and . . . if the cylinder throats are correctly sized . . . is it's s/n stamped on the rear face of the cylinder under the extractor star? N716536 shipped in Dec 1980.

linde, I grew up in DeKalb county and recall when DCPD carried the S&W 25-5. Is your gun marked DCPD? I bought my gun shortly after the county switched to something else, from a gun shop in Athens, GA. A member here owns a 25- that was carried by the Chief of DCPD.

There are no markings on my example that would confirm it's DCPD heritage. Were any of DCPD's Model 25-5s marked in some way?

My gun does not have the serial number on the cylinder under the ejector star. It does have a WO rear sight. I have not measured the chamber throats, that never concerned me much as it throws a BIG bullet.
In a post above, poor performance was mentioned. There was a case where two officers were attacked and fired at the perp, the last bullet striking a butt cheek as he ran around a corner of the house. The butt cheek was pretty much blown off.

I am unsure if the duty guns were marked. I did have a S&W 66 that was a DCPD gun that was marked.
BTW, my serial number is N8442XX, the gun was wearing Pachmayrs when I bought it.

The DCPD took control of the DC firing range off Goddard Rd. in Lithonia, GA which had been run by DC Parks & Rec. The range was open to the public and I spent a lot of time out there. I recall seeing officers wearing S&W 25-5s with a mixture of stocks; Pachmayrs, magnas, and targets.

As far as I can remember, the DCPD 25's were not marked, but I could be wrong.
The performance problem I heard about had a round glance off the sternum of a disturbed hospital resident. Again, that was the story I heard.
Used to frequent the DeKalb County range mentioned above, but I haven't been there in years.
I lived in DeKalb County for many years. From about 1954 till I went into the Navy in 69.
When I got out, I lived there for another 6 years or so. Lived in Gwinnett for 20 some od years and now reside in Walton. Dean
