With the presentation case in good condition, the standard version w/knife has been bringing $850 - $1000 on the auction sites recently.

If it has been fired the value drops a lot. Make very sure before you buy.

A corollary to that statement would be that if you are buying it as anything other than a safe queen, you should probably look for one that has already been fired.

What would be a ballpark price range for one that has been fired and lacks the case and knife?

FWIW I think these are a bit undervalued. They have some uncommon features like the partially cut away trigger guard, a smooth trigger and nice stocks with the cut out on the opposite side plus a bluing job that seems to me to be a cut above the typical bluing of the day. And only 10,000 made which, while it is a lot, is still a limited number versus the ton of standard 4" blued 19-3s. It may be a case where the commemorative aspect has hurt values. I bought my complete NIB set a couple years back for around $800 and I think these are great deals. Hey you get a cool knife and a nice presentation case too!

Sometimes I wonder if the revolver was a Lew Horton distributor exclusive without the TR connection if the values today would be far higher than they are.

Not to hijack this thread, but after reading the experts comments, how does one know if a firearm has never been fired?? I have seen brand new firearms in LGS that have been handled and fondled showing very slight turn rings, anything else to look for?

The TR commemorative is a beautiful revolver. It was dolled up with all the best features of the day.

I'd have bought one back in the day, but I wasn't a Ranger. Wish they had made a "deluxe" model without the TR markings.

There is one for sale at Targetmaster, an indoor shooting range and gun store in Garland, Texas. If you call them to see what they're asking for it you'll have an idea - although I think once you hear their price you'll be more than happy to pay 1000 dollars. If I could recall their asking price I'd tell you but I am pretty sure 1000 bucks won't get it.

Around the time I was looking for a nice NIB set one of the LGS in my town had one and was asking $1600. I bought mine off GB for half. There are usually a couple for sale on GB at any given time and often the minimum is $1K or more. And often they don't sell as there may be another one just as nice for under the $1K threshold. Not that I don't think they're worth over $1K - a beautiful NIB 19-3 with special features plus a cool knife, sheath, a presentation case...I can see $1K+ in value there. I'm just a wee bit cheap and patient and looked until I found what I thought was a good deal.

I really love the TR and if I could find one the engraved sets I would probably do whatever it took to buy one of those.

That is a really nice package and fairly unique (I think) among S&W commemoratives, with the knife and all. I'm too cheap to pay the price but it looks like if it's under $1,000 it's reasonable.

Some of our members here have post their set before and they are awesome! Maybe they will be kind enough to post again.

This Deluxe set was engraved by Tom Frieburger:

This one was most likely engraved by Russ Smith (per tom Frieburger and PP):

Wow. Just wow. Those are gorgeous. After I said I would probably do whatever it took to buy one of those I saw one for sale for $4,000. Apparently it takes $4K so I may have to be happy with my humble set for now. But I sure love seeing those beauties. Hopefully some day......

(There's only 50 of the Deluxe sets, correct?)

$4,000 is not a bad price for any Factory Master Engraved revolver, for one of the 50 Deluxe Texas Rangers I think it is a bargain in today's market

The great thing about the 50 Deluxe Texas Rangers is that no two are the same.

I really love the backstrap on mine, it has more coverage than any other I have seen so far

Kind of strange. When I was dispersing Cousin's estate, the TR 19 brought pretty good money, but the TR Colt brought a small fortune. But, I bought the Colt for him and gave almost two grand for it back when.

Many commemorative guns never achieve the iconic status or value that the buyers expect or anticipate, especially when the production numbers are sizable. The TR model is a prime example. I'd rather have a used Combat Magnum than a boxed, unfired "limited edition" model 19.

I agree they are undervalued. 1000 is a deal. I love 19's and those are the nicest 19's I have put my hands on. I have one that looks new but is one of my shooters and another nib. I would buy several at that 850 price in a minute unfired. Likely buy another for 1000 unfired. They have that cut out trigger guard, TT, TH and TG. Bluing us to die for.
Awesome guns.

I have seen TR's sell for as little as $700.00 NIB. Never were a big seller around here.
