Default Ammo for S&W Model 48 22Mag

I'm looking for recommendations for 22 mag ammo for my revolver. I've shot a box of Winchester Super X 40 grain rated at 1910 FPS. I think it's to hot for this revolver. Ejection was hard and accuracy was terrible. This revolver is new to me and Super X is the only brand available in my locker. As all of you know 22 ammo is hard to come by, so before I'm put on a waiting list I was looking for suggestions as to what would be the best. Thanks

My 22 mag J-frame revolvers are fussy about ammo vs accuracy. I have found that CCI 40 Gr. Maxi Mag ammo is the best for my J-frame magnums, over Winchester & Remington. Either the solids or the hollow points work well in my 650 and 651.
I haven't shot my mod 48's in many years so I'm not sure what they like nowadays.
Also be sure the charge holes are not built up with fouling.

The Hornady FTX load (45 grain projectile) is designed for handguns.

You didn't mention what barrel length model 48 you have; I suspect the loads optimized for handguns (aka downloaded) might be better in shorter barrels. You'll probably need to try several brands and loads to find one yours likes, and it could very well be one of the "rifle" loads. Be sure to double up on hearing protection!

My 48 8 3/8" likes the heavier bullets, 45 grain and really likes the 50 grain Federals, but with .22 mag of late the choices are limited. Can't hit a barn door with the 30-35 grain stuff. I find it a bit strange strange you, can find all kinds of .17 which is derived from the .22mag case.

My 4" 48 really likes the 40 gr. Win. and it does get hard to eject but that is with any brand including Honady . 22 mag ammo is very dirty , so really cleaning the chambers and running a brush through when things start getting sticky will help . Also you could search past threads about chamber polishing .22's .

Based on my results with a PMR-30, I would suggest 40 grain CCI TMJ or Maximags as a good place to start if accuracy is a primary concern. 30 gr bullets I find to be inaccurate but the terminal effects are impressive if you can hit the target.
