Default I want night sights on a 19-2!!!

So my brother got my dad an old worn out 19-2 that started life as a blued gun but was nickel plated at some point(sights and all). It's got a target trigger and hammer and adjustable sights (well they're supposed to be. nickel kinda froze them up).

My dad shoots the thing like a boss but I'd like to have a set of night sights put on it. At the very least a big dot on the front. Is front sight pinned in? If not, who can mill a dovetail or a stake pocket for a front night sight and which model # do I need?

Thanks guys!

I don't think I would do that. Any 19-2 is much better off when left alone and in original condition unless it's a totally wore out beater.

Cylinder & Slide can do it, as well as others whose names escape me at the moment.

Please reconsider & not put night sights on a Model 19. That is like putting a laser sight on a 12 gage pump home defender or a bayonet on an M&P pistol's accessory rail; like cottage cheese and ketchup. You can eat it, but, why?

Lets see the gun, maybe then some of the purists here might not mind if you mix it up a bit. The front sight/ramp is pinned to the barrel, but I'm not sure if there are any night sight replacements out there - might be a custom job. My only concern would be the "worn out" part. Just the finish is one thing, but if it isn't a workable gun to begin with you probably won't come out ahead putting more money into it.

Crimson Trace still makes laser grips for the K frame.

Thanks for the replies guys. For those of you that think I'd be ruining a perfect gun, I'm not. It's still perfectly functioning but at some point in its life the entire gun was dipped into a nickel tank and then carried and beat up again. We only paid $300 for it so it's just a shooter.

My dad shoots it way more accurately than his old Colt 1911. It's become his nightstand gun for when something goes bump in the night and his mossberg is too much for his drunk ***** to deal with.

We've finally got him watching that front sight when he's shooting and he can transition accurately between targets like a mad man. But his eyesights getting worse and it would be nice to have something a little more obvious and bright for a front dot.

I figured it would have to be somewhat custom but thought somebody might have done this before and could offer up advice, part #s, etc. Ill check with cylinder and slide.

I think it was meprolight that makes night sights for target sighted S&Ws and they're interchangeable. The front sight they make is made to replace just the red ramp insert on newer guns. If you get the front sight cut to accept a red ramp, it will accept the meprolight insert. The rear sight just goes in in place of the rear blade sight

Anything that'll help Dad enjoy shooting is a good thing. Heck, some folks seem to forget that the factory's been known to put a fiber optic or two on firearms in the Performance Center...this ain't a novel idea (but it is a good one.) There are several sights out there that are made for any competent gunsmith to install easily. They may have to cut the old sight off and mill a slot, so choose your 'smith carefully. It may be a "beater" but you still want any custom work to be an improvement. I don't remember the specific brands of sights, but a google for fiber optic handgun sights should do the trick for you. Have fun and don't let any curmudgeons spoil it for ya.

I had night sights just put on my 66-3 snub this past summer. Like others have stated, the front unit went right into the dovetail for the plastic red ramp insert, and the rear just replaces the blade.

If it has been nickeled as you having a night sight installed won't hurt anything. A good gunsmith should be able to set you up with some sort of high viability front sight. I don't know what configuration the bottom of a 19-2 front sight looks like, so no advice there. If the new front sight ends up with a different height than the original you may have to replace the rear sight blade with one that matches. Replacing the rear sight blade and screw mechanism may well fix the stuck rear sight. If not, You should be able to find a another functioning rear sight somewhere like Ebay for about $80. Measure the distance to the screw that attaches to the frame though and get one that matches as there are differences.

But, your comment about his being drunk is concerning. If you are to drunk to figure out a Mossberg you don't need a model 19 with a night sight. A man does has a right to get drunk in his own home and still defend himself. But, it is also a recipe for a terrible wreck as guns and drunk don't mix well. Mixed feelings here.

PS. I would advise against such comments on the internet.

This was easy enough to do, and we can shoot it much better now. Don't think we hurt it any.

Bruner 1981 beat me to it:

Meprolight Night Sights for Smith Wesson Pistols, Revolvers and Shotguns FREE S&H ML11735, ML11766, ML22770, ML11765, ML22771, ML11760. Meprolight Tritium & Fiber Optic Night Sights.

I've been tempted to install one of these on one of my revolvers, but I find the C-T laser grips work fine for me.

Best of luck,

Dave
