Model 50 Target - Gun Show Find
Today I went to the local gun show that was sponsored by the Virginia Gun Collectors Association. It was in Manassas, VA. The associations motto is, JJJ, no jewelry, no jerky, and no junk. First I met a couple of long time members of the SWCA who had a table that just made me drool. If it wasn't for their post earlier in the week I wouldn't have been there.
So what did I find - a Smith & Wesson Model 50 that I want to call, LNIB, numbered grips, no turn line, fantastic bluing and original labeled box. The SN indicates it was shipped in 1978. I have been looking for one of these for a long time to go along with my other targets. Thanks guys.

Yours is beautiful - I have to learn how to take photo's. On one of the Chiefs Special Threads I saw that only 37 were shipped in 1978 if they fell in the 933J - 936J range??? I love all the Shark Fins.

All three of ours end in 8s
I have one that has a serial number between yours (jackvs1) and colt_saa's. Mine ends with the number 8 just like both of yours. I wonder who else has this model and if the serial sequence changes... Maybe a coincidence.

Good find.
I was very impressed with the show. There were some really nice and very tempting Smith's there. I ended up trading a Mauser for a different Mauser.

Good job! I did not know what a 50 is, so I opened the post. It is cool looking, to say the least. You NEVER know what is waiting at the gun show. Was there any jerky? (despite rules) Bob

I did the same thing. As a matter of fact, I thought the "50" was a misprinted number! I learn something new everyday. From what I see, the marked Model 50s are somewhat rare!!

There are some really nice 50's here. The 50 is on my list. Could some one state a value range in today's market?

Jack great gun to own/find. I passed on one about a 2 years ago because I just purchased 4-5 guns in a 1 month period and I was holding backing off. It was for sale by one of the SWCA members here in Ohio. Boy do I regret that decision. That is a very nice target J frame revolver. Congrats!

Randy - I just found out mine was shipped in March 1973, same as yours. 568 of them were shipped that year.

I have number 935J63, and it has a correct but not the original box. Also a Model 60 2 inch with target sights.
Strange, cute little guns.

What a great bunch of screamin' Model 50s!
Below is from my Chief Target Commentary here:
http://smith-wessonforum.com/blog.php?u=134353
• Sporadic production from 1965 – 1975, Mod 50*, 2” and 3”, Rd or Sq Butt, early w/3rd style flat latch until 1966 and/or diamond grips until 1968, a few with 3” bbl, RR front, W/O rear sight and wide trigger.
Although assigned Model 50 in 1962, not stamped Mod 50 until 1973.
• 568 made in 1973-1975, Mod 50, # 930j45 - 936j19, 2" Sq Butt, standard thumbpiece. 3 known in nickel that lettered as 36-1, SCSW p. 217, which appear to be left over from this Mod 50 production based on serial #s*.
• 37 in 1978, Mod 50, prefix # range 933jXX - 936jXX, 2”, Sq Butt. Perhaps because it wouldn't fit on the 2" barrel, these do not have front sight ramp base like the Model 36-1 target of 1975 production*, one of 213 made with a front sight base on pinned 3" HB (w/o barrel shroud). Special feature code on box label G347:
*Although there are a few with a shorter front sight base from 1976 production:
Jim Fisher has a 36-1, 3” HB, with shorter ramp base frt. sight, Nickel RB serial #J455856, code H13, which appears to be a 4th one left over from 1973 Mod 50 production (3 known in SCSW, 3rd ed., p. 217) shown here:

That explains this Model 36 marked target, also a gun show find from a handful of years ago....

Roe,
Another spectacular target and with scarce smooth presentation stocks.
Do they number to the gun?
From the serial # I would date late 1966 to 67.

Not that I can tell. One panel is stamped 244, the other 16 or I6.

Optional stocks seldom have the gun's serial # because the gun is special fitted and handled. But of course, only a letter will tell for sure if original stocks.
