36 no dash 3" help!!!!
Ok so I've become addicted to S&W revolvers, particullary the pinned barrel ones. I'm always looking and ran across this today and while I dont consider it a "deal" I'm considering it.
Model 36 (no dash), 3" blued, dated to 1976-1977, original grips, no box, papers or tools. OTD price is $550 (I do have $125 gift card so $425 out of pocket) There is some blueing wear on the right side above the grip (quarter sized) but over all a pretty clean gun...maybe 85-90% with solid lock up and no cylinder shake.
so the question is...is this the going rate? Would you grab it up considering its local or find one on the forum/internet for a better deal? Thanks guys.

That is a bit high for a Model 36 but I see more of the snubbies than I do the 3 inch. I would keep looking.

It's worth offering $75 less, the seller can only say yes or no. The 3" aren't that common, so if $550 is too high, it may be the going rate by the time you find another one.

I've got a model 36 snub on the way but I do like the 3" better. I was actually looking for the least expensive price I could get away with. I got it on GB for $420 but with shipping and FFL add another $40. I could have held out for a 'beater', but this was ok.

I think you are spot on with your price. Here in north Texas Model 36s go for no less than 400 bucks on up to 575 in pristine condition with box and papers. Detective specials hover around 575 to 650. I do love a nice model 36 but have yet to accept my own premise that I won't find one below 400 and have yet added one to my accumulation of things. I always think that if I am willng to pay 400 why not come up with a couple more hundred and move up to something in a .357......this accumulating is a disease.

My 3" 36 is a -1... all -1's are 3" but not necessarily the other way around. I don't find the longer barrel an inpediment to CC in a IWB holster. (On a plainclothes assignment the officer in charge asked me if I was armed, LOL!)
I can't speak to value (since mine was bought so long ago) but I'd try to deduct for the finish wear.

I've seen square butt 3" guns, and I prefer round butt. Is the one you're looking at a square butt or round?

Its a square butt , non heavy barrel. I've been thinking all morning trying to get price lower...they wont budge, except I do get a military discount (5% = $25 off). So now I can be in it a total of $525. Still too high, I hate contributing to an already inflated market.

Cockmiles, you stole that! I was in SC for several years and found a large percentage of my collection there for what I considered great deals! Great find IMHO!

I have been following these on GB lately and for $550 you should be able to find one in the 95%. I just bookmark all the potential options and wait till I find a listing that gets overlooked, that typically occurs during the week. If your patient something will come along. Why let $50-$75 bucks separate you from owning a really nice example. There are far more out there than I realized. Good Luck

I bought one on GB about a month ago, $425+shipping. 98%, no box or anything else. Sweet little shooter!

Found a few also. Interesting thing though, I took the dealer a Model 10-5 police trade (65-70%) in for trade he offered me $350! Thinking the situation may be working out! Thoughts????

Welcome to the forum!
I paid $495+tax for a 36-1, square butt, in almost unfired condition last year. So the price isn't outrageous. $350 in trade is a good deal on a 4" 10-5 in almost any condition.
I used to over-think these things. I'd come here to the forum and ask the question - just like you are. Answer is: it's certainly worth what they're asking IF YOU WANT IT. The price isn't bad.
I ended up selling/trading my old shooter-grade model 10's (not all of them!) in the $300-$350 range. I'm glad I did. I'd rather have less guns that I really like, than have more of them that I'm not ecstatic about.
Final thought: If you really like the 3" model 36, I'd wait and find a pristine example. They are out there and you know the market now.
Again, welcome to the forum.

WOW! I cant make this stuff up! So I tried to work a better deal and failed. I did however stumble into a 36 no dash at a local pawn shop today and traded even for my M10-5! The 36 is 98% (never seen a cleaner one). Its now got me thinking am I missing something??? Please help me on dating and verifying what I think.
36 no dash , SN 7732XX on frame bottom and grips. Under grips is stamped 71876 (inspector) and a circle with 22 inside it. Pics to follow.
