I recently picked up nice 29-2 Shooter from Forum member. I
never have liked the ramp with red insert. Will the partridge
sight from a 27 fit 29s? In the woods or range I'd rather have
The clean sight picture they provide. Seems like ramps get
polished from holster giving us old guys, with old eyes, a fuzzy
front sight. Are these sight blades available from S&W?
Taroman, Did you replace the sights yourself on those guns. My 6.5" 29-2 sight is damaged a while back and I called S&W and was told that I couldn't replace the blade because it was made into the rib. I do not see a pin through the sight base on my 29-2. Can you offer any advice?
Both of mine were pinned.
I paid to have the 8-3/8" one done many years ago.
After realizing how simple the process is, I changed the 6-1/2" one myself.
At the factory, the sights are pinned in before the gun is polished and blued. Oftentimes, this makes the pin nearly impossible to see.
Whilst many S&Ws had machined in front sights, those more knowledgeable than I must weigh in as to whether all 29-2s were pinned or not.
Depends on your 29-2 vintage ,
29-2s made in the 60's have a ramp that is pinned to the barrel with 2 cross pins and a FS blade that is pinned to the ramp with one pin.
Early 70's the ramp becomes integral with the barrel but the blade is still a seperate piece that is fixed with 1 pin,
My 29-2 Serial N 310024 Shipped July 1975 and has a ramp which is integral with the barrel but a visible pin that holds the FS blade to the ramp . (as stated above many are polished flush and very difficult to see unless held up to a bright light).
IIRC by the very end of the 29-2 revision the FS blade becomes part of the ramp and is no longer pinned ,
By the 29-3 revision the blade and ramp are part of the barrel and not removable, My 29-3 Serial AYE 3117 shipped Jan 1988 with barrel and ramp integral with the barrel.
S&W used to offer a service where they would mill the FS blade off then cut a channel and cross drill the ramp for a set pin then replace your FS blade with the style of your choosing but not sure they offer this service anymore..

My 29-2 is 1977 vintage so, it might be possible that my front sight is pinned and polished flush. The CS rep that I spoke to did not indicate that any of the 29-2 sights had been pinned. I suggested cutting off the existing sight as you indicated and was told that the way that it was made did't allow that. I think that it often depends on who you talk to because many have little or on knowledge of older Smiths. I dropped it off at Ford's to have them see what they can do with it.
