J Frame Square grip question
Hi folks. What's on your J frame square butt?
I have a Pachmayr rubber grip on my M36. And I enjoy it so far. But a friend of mine shot it a few time and stated the recoil make the grip uncomfortable. I really want her to start shooting with me so I'm trying to shop around other grips.
Do you have one that you can recommend?

If she thinks the Pachmayrs are uncomfortable, she will really hate the walnut magnas or targets.
Perhaps the 36 is too snappy for her. Have you a K frame?

This will not answer your question but might help your problem.
Start her on a smaller caliber or a larger frame 38.

However as stated above, those grips will not solve your problem.
You might look for a model 34 or 63 as the entry gun to teach a novice about small concealable firearms.
Personally I start novices on a model 17 and work them into the model 14.

If Pachmayrs are recoil-uncomfortable, that's a tough one. I find later rubber grips like Uncle Mike's ergonomically superior, but I don't know whether those were even made for square butts. Alternately, you could try putting a grip adapter on the gun; some people prefer the somewhat rolling motion of the smoother original wood grips to the friction of the textured rubber which transmits more of the recoil sensation to the hand surface.
I have a period-correct Mershon adapter on the 1959 square-butt Model 36 in my collection and find it quite pleasant to shoot.

I have a Target Masterpiece with Magnas grip. But she didn't like the 6" barrel. "Too heavy" she said.

Interesting. I might give that a shot. That means 2 more items to buy.

You might also try a Tyler T Grip adapter with the factory wood SB Stocks. Even though wood won't soak up recoil like rubber does, sometimes the better fit of the Tyler T and Factory wood gives better control and has less felt recoil if the Pachmeyer's happen not to fit an individuals grip all that well.
I have gone full circle and ditched all my Pachy's for the Factory grips with Tyler T's. Works for me.

I'm going to guess your "J" Frame is a light weight. Standard or +P rounds in a alloy frame will turn off most new shooters. I would have her try a K Frame size handgun, or have her use reduced loads. 38 wadcutter loads are usually available if you don't reload. This is a perfect example for a 32 Long/32 H&R Magnum in a steel J frame. Minimal recoil. I would however make sure it has a Tyler/BK grip adapter.

My 36 was made in 70'. No +P, all steel.

Does your friend fancy firearms and really wants to shoot or is this something you are hoping she'll warm up to? Guns have recoil. Period! Some more than others.
If she really wants to learn...find a model 18 and load it with CB rounds. If she doesn't, give up or find a friend who loves shooting as much as you do.

Hornady makes a 90gr critical defense light load for women.
It comes in a pink box and the recoil is easier to handle.
I have those in my wife's 642.

Current grips with Tyler, appropriate for concealed carry.
For range or home use, these old Mustang grips were the most comfy to use. Now on a 43 square butt:

I don’t know if I’ll be of any help or not. All my J frames have factory magna grips except this one. I just recently bought it and intended to replace the grips until I shot it. These grips are extremely comfortable, at least to me. I don’t know what the maker is, but maybe someone can ID them. The medallion appears to be an eagle with arrows in its claws if that helps.

That logo is on the Italian mfg grips imported and sold by Sile Distributors in NYC in the 60s/70s.
