You've already sent your 686 in to S&W? What did they say when you originally alerted them to the issue before sending it in?
Because your 686 predates S&W's lifetime warranty, it doesn't receive priority inspection and repair -- might be months before you hear back.
They might replace the broken stud, they might decline -- both responses have been received by members here with a similar problem in a pre-warranty gun. What accounts for the difference isn't always evident.
I doubt they'll replace the frame -- don't think they've got any of the old style L-frames sitting around, and the new-style wouldn't be a match. Likeliest is they'll press in a new stud. If they refuse, there are a few old school revolversmiths still around who will.
