Model 10-6 Hammer Question
My LGS just listed an excellent condition, 1964 vintage S&W Model 10-6 with original wood grips and a target hammer. Rang 'em right away and asked them to hold it for me. Were target hammers common on the 10-6? Common or not, assuming it checks out okay, I am buying it. Just curious ... and always happy to learn from the experts. Thanks in advance!

The model 10 was designed to be a rugged service revolver. I have never seen one equipped with target hammer or trigger from the factory. This isn't to say that none were produced that way but, it would not be a common option for the model 10. The 10-6 is an excellent revolver. It will be one of the last of my revolvers that I would part with.

Since there is sometimes a bit of confusion about the terminology, are you talking about a true .500" target hammer (which would be very unlikely to be factory-installed) or just the run-of-the-mill wide hammer spur (see pic below), which is fairly common on the Model 10-6? Mine, pictured here, is a 1968 vintage standard NYPD 10-6.

Most model 10s had the .265" hammer spur (service). Some had the .400 (semi-target) and the .500 (target) version. Easy to swap so only a factory letter would tell you if your gun had it originally.

It looks like I stand corrected, and the Model 10-6 did come in three configurations, standard trigger and hammer, standard trigger and wide hammer spur (my gun), and target hammer and target trigger (see the pic below I found online). The wide hammer (I guess that's the .400 version per Alan's post) was not mentioned in my gun's letter, which usually indicates it was considered standard, unless of course it was a replacement.

They may have come with any combination of hammer/trigger with a special order, or a parts swap  .

vintage model 10
i just bought a model 10 with a five inch barrel.i`m guessing its a 1960`s revolver.what do you need to help identify it.thanks
