A couple of "firsts" for me
I have the chance to buy a Model 27-2, 6" nickel in amazing condition. Serial number is S310xxx and I will have a little under $700 in it when all is said & done. I feel it is a fair price, but not a steal by any means. Please correct me if I am wrong. As this will be my first Model 27 and first nickel plated gun, is there any special care or "do not do's" concerning the finish (as compared to blued versions) or anything else I need to know? Forgot to mention target grips are replacements from same era, but everything else is like new. Will post pics when I take delivery (hopefully tomorrow!)
Thanks,
Jim

Ya' did good friend.
I'll give you 710 if you don't like it.
No really, 700 for an "S" serial number 27
in great condition is an (all day long) YES
around here.

The only thing I'd be careful of is pulling a muscle reaching for my wallet. That's a bonafide steal for any 27, but an S prefix to boot.
I can't help you on the nickel finish, but this post is certain to get replies.
Well done.

Congrats on your find! I have never owned a nickel gun either. I do believe that cleaners that have ammonia in them {Hoppes} can harm the finish. Never had a 27 either. Settled for a 6" 28 no dash. (1960) Not sorry I did! We will be waiting for pics. Bob

If your gun is going to be a "shooter", I recommend NOT cleaning the face of the cylinder back to "undetectable powder burn" nickel. Even with chemical carbon removers (C-4 Carbon Remover), there is a fair amount of rubbing. Eventually this will rub thru the nickel to the copper base. Just don't let the carbon build up interfere with the cylinder gap- barrel clearance (0.004" minimum).
BTW - great find and enjoy!

I use Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish on my nickel/SS firearms. Even with it, you only want to go lightly unless there is a bad scratch or mar you want to remove.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Smith EVER used a copper substrate on nickeled guns.

Thanks to all for the responses and helpful advice.
bananaman, I, too, had "settled" and been happy with a M28 6", but when this showed up, I decided it was now or never to upgrade. As it turned out this morning (I was there when they opened) I found that it was a 5", which made me happy. After talking for a while, the owner said $615 OTD and I was ecstatic! Was going to pay the $650+tax, so needless to say all that remained was the paperwork and payment. Here are pics (I am obviously NOT a photographer, so 2 with flash and 2 w/o.)

Nice buy. I would have been all over that. You got a great nickle 27 at close to a plain Jane model 28 price.

Looks like it may have been re-barrelled but still a pretty fair deal.

Bruce,
There are no indications of being back to S&W that I can find under the (un-numbered) grips. One interesting mark in the arch behind the trigger is a "VA" joined together, which looks to have been there before being nickelled. Everything else seems "normal." Story I got was original owner was a retired Detroit PD officer and officer in the MI Nat. Guard. Retired to local area (Stanwood/Canadian Lakes) some years ago. Wife was disposing of the weapons (also had a 15-4 blued 2", but I passed at $550.) Anyway, I wanted to wipe her down under the grips and try to get a little better pictures, so your post got me going!
Thanks,
Jim

A gun doesn't have to be returned to the factory to be re-barrelled. The barrel with the lazy ampersand and the sight base pinned to the rib doesn't seem right for a gun with a serial number that high but I could be wrong. The stocks may also have been changed. Regardless, if it's mechanically straight, it's still a good deal. Is there a large "N" on the back face of the cylinder.
Bruce
P.S. I would never use an abrasive cleaner such as Mother's Mag Polish as a standard maintenance item on any nickel revolver. Nickel is relatively soft and sooner or later, you'll wear thru especially at the square corners.

I don't think it's been re-barreled. Looks awesome to me.
Also, in what condition was the 15-4 snubby?

Congrats on that buy! Re-barreled or not, still worth that money.

Bruce,
I do not see an "N" on the cylinder, like on the frame. Extractor is blued. I just meant there was no obvious date on factory work on the frame (that would be too easy!) The previous owner's wife thought she recalled that the grips had been changed, but was not sure. There again, there are no numbers on the grips, as opposed to the wrong numbers. Not sure if they were numbering grips in 1968-69, but am very happy with the purchase as I am pretty sure I will not do better. I will shoot it a bit and enjoy the quality, but only clean it with an oily rag as necessary.

19leben,
The 15-4 was pretty decent, I would rate it a solid 90%, maybe a little more if not for the grip wear. Metal was great. It was just not my cup of tea. It sold while I was filling out the paperwork on the 27...maybe I screwed up?

The 15-4 was priced too high in my opinion. You got the better deal. Be happy and shoot straight!

M27's at that time were shipped with magna's standard. Target stocks were never numbered to my knowledge. The diamond insert in the stocks was deleted in late 1968. You gun probably shipped in March 1968. I believe that nickel guns had a large "N" stamped into the rear face of the cylinder back then. All things considered-nice gun.
