Default Combat Masterpiece 18-3

LGS had this in their showcase today. 1971 Model 18-3 with magna's numbered to the gun. I'd say it's 95%.

All Mod 18's are 4". If it's a 6" gun it's a Mod 17.

The store had it tagged at $499 and I thought that was a fair price.

Nice find! The 5% finish loss must be inside the frame window . Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing. Great deal! That would be a $700 or more gun in my neighborhood.

That is only slightly above half of what it would cost in my area. Nice find!

I just read the model 18 was possibly made as a LE training gun for transition to the mode 19. Anyone have information or can substantiate that?

Go out and buy a few LOTTO tickets. You may be equally as LUCKY with them as that FIND. Great snag there. Enjoy it.

IIRC the K-38 "Combat Masterpiece" was introduced just prior to the 4" K-22 (around 1949 ish), while many Police depts probably used the smaller caliber gun as a trainer the K frame .357 "Combat Magnum" was not introduced until late 1955.

The K-22 "Combat Masterpiece" initially was the same as the 6" K-22 with a shorter barrel but by 1955 the 4" and 6" K-22's have different frame and barrel profiles.

Lastly while all factory Mod 18 revisions were 4" not all 6" K-22's are Mod 17's and while Model 17 variations are mostly 6" some revisions were offered in 8,3/8" and later in 4" lengths as well.

Okay now I'm both cross-eyed and dizzy.
I have seen numerous GB listings for "pre model 17s, but they have 4" tapered barrels. So aren't these Combat Masterpieces (pre Mod 18s) instead? Because of the tapered barrels?

Depends.... If it is an original factory made 4" K-22 that pre dates the model numbering system its actually a K-22 Combat Masterpiece", If its easier for you to think of it as a "Pre 18" then yes.
If someone cuts down a 6" K-22 Masterpiece" to 4" its really not but would look like one IMO .

No, I generally prefer to call the guns by their proper nomenclature. the whole pre thing is buggy, since Smith & Wesson never made and named anything as a "Pre".
That's why I made mention of GB listings that are misidentifying guns for auction.
Lots of Combat Masterpieces being pushed as "pre 17s".
