Model 10-7 Grip Question
Picked up a Model 10-7, Early pinned barrel. My s/n# is 4D493XX. I was wondering about the matching stamped grips. Someone told me my 10-7 should date around 1979.
When did Smith & Wesson start marking/stamping the grips to the gun ? And when did they stop this ? Would like to know, when purchasing a firearm, to expect it to have matching grips.
looking forward to getting my new 4th edition Standard.
Thank You

This started with the very first revolvers produced, and stopped in the early 1980s.

Your gun most likely shipped January 1979, Maybe Dec 78. Is the right hand stock marked with the serial number? Nice looking piece.

Yes, it is stamped with the last 5 of the s/n #. As soon as I saw it, I had to have it. I knew the older model had the s/n matching on the grips. Was not sure how far along they continued doing that.
Thanks for all the help, alot of information I have learned on here.

They look period correct. In the event the numbers after the letter match the serial number, you should be good. I say after the letter since some of my Smiths only have the numbers on the grip after the letter when a letter is the first mark on the serial number. How is yours marked exactly on the grip? I might learn something here since none of mine have a numeral prior to a letter and then the remaining are numbers.

Nice looking 10! Good blue. Has it been to the range yet? My 10-6 went for the 1st time Monday. Getting some light primer strikes. Upon closer investigation, it has a shortened strain screw. New 1 is on the way. Enjoy your 10! Bob

Earlier ones had the serial number written in pencil on the inside. Only later did they stamp it. I have a revolver that shipped in 1946 with the s/n stamped inside the stocks, if that's any help.
There was a thread a while back that listed the approximate year stamping began, but I can't find it. I hope one of the experts here who knows will speak up.
