Model 19-3 extra digits
I took this gun to a gunsmith and he seemed to think that it could be rare, I was wondering if anyone knew what the extra markings under the grip are for? The same 5 digits are next to the model number.

Duster - welcome to the Forum!
Sorry, but your gunsmith is incorrect. That is the "assembly" number. Besides the two places that you've noted, the same number will be found on the inside of the sideplate

Note, and "gunsmith" who isn't aware of S&W's use of assembly numbers should NOT be considered qualified to actually work in an S&W revolver, it's a practice of S&W that goes way way back in the companies history.
As for the specific purpose of these numbers, the Frame, Yoke, and Sideplate are individually fitted together making them a Matched Set. This number is used to keep these parts together for all the subsequent operations such as polishing and bluing after they are fitted together.

The SN is the number on the butt of the grip frame.
It's factory nickle
I'd like to see the whole thing !
