Hello, I am going to look at a S&W model 31-1. The serial number is (8185xx). Anyone know about when this was made. Assume this is a J frame?

1961-1970 per SCS&W.

Probably made in 1969. Sometime in 1969, they switched to the H prefix serial numbers.

And yes, a 31-1 would be a J frame. That is actually what the dash 1 means. Prior to that, they were built on the I frame.

I looked at a 31-1 today with the 4" barrel, diamond grips, with the original box. Serial number was H9928. I'd say it was about 95% condition. Gun store was asking $750 for it. Said they could sell it "today only" for $690.

What's the value on that weapon?

Not sure about the price but the gun is 1969-70. Are cars also sold there?

Felt like that. It's a high volume place. Seemed to know what they had, just checking the price. Our big gun show isn't until March.
