Probably an M29 barrel on a M58 frame. A lot easier than reboring the barrel.

Yep, it's a Model 58 frame with a Model 29 barrel, suitably modified. The grooved rib of the Model 29 was machined to mimic the Model 58 flat top barrel and a new front sight pinned in place.
Here's a comparison of the .44 M59, a 4" M29-2 and my M58 that I had refinished by S&W a few years ago. Model 58, refinished by S&W Interestingly, the serial numbers of the two M58s are only about 300 apart.
Note that the flat on the top of the barrel of the custom gun is wider than that on on the factory M58. Apparently a little more had to be machined away to eliminate the grooves of the M29 barrel.
I had seen an M58 .44 Mag like this at a gun show in Tulsa back around 2008, but I had just bought a M21-4 (.44 Special) and a M22-4 (.45ACP) and didn't feel like I could justify spending the money on yet another 4" fixed-sight big bore. Naturally I've been kicking myself ever since. When I saw this one on Gunbroker I jumped in. Turns out I was the only bidder, and the final price after shipping and my dealer's fee was only about $150 over what I would've paid nine years ago. And heck, for all I know it's the same gun!
Of course Doc44 has one similar produced by the factory (because Bill has at least one of everything imaginable), but it's even more special with a 3-1/4" barrel and round butt. http://smith-wessonforum.com/135635243-post18.html

Yeah, a buddy of mine has one that looks a great deal like yours, except that it's a .45 ACP. Someone did a very nice job of grafting a 25-2 barrel and cylinder onto the 58 frame. Try as I may, I just can't get him to trade it to me. He bought it from an estate, so no telling who did the work.

Tom;
I love the way you made the top of the barrel plain to match the 58. When I made mine, I just had my machinist re machine the front sight to a lower height to match the fixed sight frame. I never even thought about having him mill out the grooves. I had the whole gun re blued anyway after everything was fit and it would have been just like yours.
HMMMMM...maybe I could just pull the barrel and...............
Anyway, yours looks GREAT;
Mike

Sorry if I wasn't clear but it's not a gun I had built - I bought it just as it is via Gunbroker. I asked the seller if he had any history on it and he was selling it on consignment, from someone who had gotten it off of Gunbroker himself! So its origin is unknown and any comments I've made on how it was put together is just speculation on my part. As I said, it could conceivably be the same gun I had seen at a gun show in 2008.

A fixed sight 4" .44 Magnum. If you want to sell it let me know!
Actually, that is next in line behind a fixed sight 5" .45 Colt based on an N-Frame of course.

A Model 57 barrel could have been used keeping the 41 Magnum caliber and creating a 58 with a shrouded elector rod.

While I understand and appreciate that the .41 Magnum was an attempt to produce the best service revolver possible at that time, a lot of us feel that the Model 58 should have also been produced in .44 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .45 Colt and .45 ACP.
That .44 is a great way to go!

I have the fixings just can't pull the trigger.
An 80 percent m58.
Spare 44 cylinder
A 58 bbl that has been rebored to 44 mag
In the years it took to accumulate all, I now prefer the 41 mag to the 44.
Decisions,decisions

What a sweet pistol. I think the combo of a four-inch .44 with fixed sights is a great trail gun, and with Specials a great HD gun.

It looks great!
Please add two pictures. One with the camera pointed straight at the muzzle and one taken from above looking straight down at the front sight. The revolver matches a local gunsmith's description of one he built for a customer a long time ago except that I do not recall him saying whether he left the ejector rod shroud or milled it off. I'm curious if the sight installation is his work.
