Dating a 25-2
Looking to get a manufacture date and approximate value of a 25-2 that originally belonged to my father. The barrel is marked Model of 1955, the frame is stamped 25-2 and the serial# is N4512XX. We purchased it for my father as a Christmas present, I have to believe in the late 70's or early 80's, not sure. It has had a total of 18 rds put through it. It is in the original presentation case with the treated paper and the tools and it is still in the original cardboard box. I didn't measure the barrel length but it is approximately 6 inches. Although it obviously has been fired it is in immaculate condition.
We cleaned it and put it back in the presentation case and never fired it again. I ended up with it when he passed away. I have read several threads recently concerning throat diameters and accuracy on these revolvers. I have not measured these, I am really not concerned because I have no intentions of firing it again. Any help in dating this revolver dated would be appreciated.

Model 25-2
I think LNIB with the presentation case is $1250 and up based on Gunbroker listings last year. But I haven't checked in a while. Willyboy

In that condition I wouldn't sell for under $1250.00. This is a relatively rare gun and there aren't ever many for sale to be found. If mine was broken down I would buy it. Just a remarkably accurate gun out of the box. I am not a good shooter but it is, with a red dot scope at 25 yards (2 handed) a 2" group, and I'm not in practice anymore. With a scope there is almost no perceived recoil with a target load.

25-2s start at $1000, add value for the presentation case. I'd shoot it, if I were you. Why not?

Shoot it, but don't forget the Moonclips
Does your 25-2 have a 6" or 6-1/2" bbl (measured from front of cylinder to the muzzle)? You should measure it, because it does affect the value and rarity of the piece. I have a slightly earlier model (1973) with a 6-1/2" bbl, and it's a great shooter- accurate and very smooth. Besides, I love .45acp and enjoy the whole moonclip process- like with my Model of 1917. Are there moonclips in the presentation case?
You do know that you need moonclips in order to properly shoot .45acp in a revolver? Actually, the moonclips are necessary to facilitate ejection of the cases after shooting, but there is a little work associated with loading/unloading the spring steel moonclips. Since your revolver has already had some rounds put through her, why not get yourself a box of .45acp and have some fun?! But don't forget the moonclips!

I've got about 35 moon clips for mine. Then I went and bought 300 45 AR cases from Starline. Oh, and then 4 speed loaders from HKS.
I bought mine unfired, in the blue cardboard box without tools, but it had the papers, at an estate auction for $550 a few years ago.

Sorry it took so long for me to reply to the barrel length question. I dug it out yesterday and the barrel measures 6 1/2 inches. The barrel is marked Model of 1955.

You do NOT need moon clips to fire 45 acp in a 25-2. They shoot just fine without them. They won't eject ... you'll have to pick the cases out of cylinder with your finger nails, which is no big deal. They pop out with no effort at all. I shot my 25-2 that way for 30yrs. Never bothered me.
