I just picked this up at the store, the s/n appears to be from 1978 based on online sources. But I'm curious about the other marks on the yoke. 96231 and BB119. Would they be stamped by the agency who issued it? the s/n is N514xxx.
The cylinder binds up after a few rounds of live fire, but not during dry fire. The ejector isn't loose. Any way to diagnose the issue? I'm reluctant to send it to S&W...
Two things I'd check: is there any powder residue under the ejector star?
This is not the easiest area to clean and crud in there can build up until the least extra (or a little heat) can push it over the edge.
Does the cylinder spin freely in the open position; does it wobble or spin true?
The star rested flush and tight, but I scrubbed everything, even under the star today. Haven't shot it yet. The cylinder spins free and true, no wobble. But it does move fore and aft a small amount. I've been reading about shims.
Is sending it to S&W for restoration an agonizing ordeal?
I'd check the rebound slid spring and make sure the trigger is returning all the way I've had a few 28-2s do that and found some one was fooling with the spring replaced the spring and no more problem
This may be the problem
