Default Curious serial of a model 36 no dash nickel 366J7x

Was curious picked up this model 36 no dash recently and it didn't follow the standard serial as the J is not in the usual place. Anyone have any info on it or the date it was manufactured?

Thanks in advance!

Had to post some pictures. It's not rare but you don't see a round butt 3" nickel no dash everyday.

Looks like a floating j serial number to me. Don't have my catalog handy for dob. Nice clean piece. I have a blue 3inch 36.

Yes I didn't realize there was a typo on the date codes in the standard catalog

Not exactly a typo.

By the end of 1970, they ran out of serial numbers consisting of a J followed by 5 numbers.

So, to create more combinations, they let the "J" move off the first position.

So, that gave S&W enough serial numbers to get through 1971 and 1972.

Your's is in that range.

After 1972, an extra digit was added and serial numbers went back to the J first followed by 6 digits.

This worked through 1981 when they again ran out.
