Another new guy needing info. on a 10-5
Sorry, I know you guys probably tire of this one, but here goes. Just acquired a like NIB S&W 10-5, tapered, blue, 6", .38 Spec. ctg, number on the butt C898175. Fixed sights, but the front is not semi-circular, but instead tapered to the rear, file cut.
Appears unfired but the cylinder has been turned.
Here's the rub. The inside of the box, beneath the "warranty", box and the warranty card are both dated April, 15, 1955.
The label on the box indicates Model 10-5, finish B, barrel 6, Stock S, ins K.
Cleaning rod and brush included.
Serial number on the box differs slightly from the gun: 889 175
I'm confused by the 1955 dates, and of course the mislabeling of the serial number on the box.
Ideas on actual date of mfg, and also value?
Thanks for your time.

The butt serial is what matters, and the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, here on the forum usually just called SCSW, places your gun in 1966/67.
I suspect the dates on the paperwork are not gun-specific. As to the box, a single switched digit could be a simple mistake. But that's all just speculation on my part.

Don't let the date on the box bother you! I see most of my 2 piece blue boxes have April 15, 1955 in them. And your serial number just looks like 2 numbers were switched.
Where are the pictures!

The date on the box is correct - for the BOX design. Likewise the paperwork.

I think someone at the factory got dyslexic with the serial number. The "S" for stocks means "Standard" as opposed to "T" for "Targets".
The front sight doesn't show really well in the pictures, but from what I can see it looks original to me. Can you see filing marks or other indications it was modified?
Value would be somewhere in the $400 to $500 range, IMHO, because so many of these were made and the six inch barrel may not be as in demand as the shorter lengths. All in all, a very nice revolver.

Yep. That date on the box continued until they changed the box I believe. Many are confused, thinking that is the date of the gun.
You might want to look on the inside of the right grip panel to see if the SN is the SN of the gun.
I would agree with Jack on the value.

The grips/stocks are post 1968. That's when the diamond was deleted. I have a couple of early 1960's k-frames with non-diamond grips. Nice 10-5.
