Smith model 64 tapered barrel question
Just got this one on trade and am unfamiliar with anything other than heavy barrels on these. How long were they used before switching?

About 15 years ago I came across one of early 64's in a pawn shop while traveling for work. If I knew then what it was, I would have snagged it.

IIRC (?) standard barrel Model 64 was only produced for a couple years
1971-1973 ? With the heavy barrel Model 64, the standard barrel was history. Firearm Record Clerk finally observed that I was still carrying a first agency issued Colt Official Police. By this late date the Heavy barrel Model 64s were all issued. My Colt was taken and I was issued a very used standard barrel Model 64. After cleaning and polishing the revolver and begging a new set of magna grips to replace the worn smooth original grips I went to the range to be qualified. I THEN noticed that the front sight had been filed down !!??. However I soon discovered that with the new issue 125 grain JHP service ammo the Model 64 shot to POA
I kept this standard barrel even when a new heavy barrel Model 64 was available

I have a no dash mod 64 with the 4" standard barrel that I bought
some years ago in an estate auction. It had the sales receipt from the
original owner's purchase in the box. Without checking I think it's
dated 1972. It's simply a plain old mod 10 in stainless. It's also one
of the best S&W models ever made. Why S&W decided to end it after
a very short time and only produce it with a heavy barrel is something
I cannot understand.

The 4" standard or tapered barrel 64 was introduced in 1970 and discontinued in 1973-'74. Many shoot handguns with extra muzzle weight better and it was probably more economical to make one barrel style, so away the tapered barrel went...

I have a Model 10 and a Model 64 with the tapered barrel. To me, the balance is better than my 15 with the heavy barrel. YMMV.

I purchased the first Model 64 with the tapered barrel that I ever saw. It was in the gun counter at a TG&Y store and it cost me money that severely crimped my available income at the time. I carried it for a good while on the job and it served me very well. At some point, in the late 70's, I had the opportunity to trade it for a nice Model 19 and received more money for the Model 64 than I had given for it on the deal. In those days, I mostly had to trade or sell a handgun to be able to get another one. I have many times regretted getting rid of that Model 64. And sadly, I have also wished I had been able to keep a few others that suffered the same fate. I suspect most of us are able to tell the same story!

Beautiful gun! That's the one we all want; although, the heavy barrel gun makes a good club. I bought one new in 1980 because stainless Smiths just didn't exist in the market place. Looked like a broom handle sticking out of the frame. Gave it to my daughter. She gave it back. Put it back in its box. It's been a good investment I guess. . .worth a lot more today than what I paid for it.

A grail gun for me. Bought one out here NIB several years ago from a private individual. Like a time capsule: the lug on the cylinder latch came loose, just as it used to on stainless guns in the early 70s. I've shot it (had to!) but I still have the box, the grips and the usual accessories put aside.

Very educational thread (for me). I didn't realize the standard or tapered barrel was limited to just the first few years of production. I find it to be an absolutely beautiful gun in that variation. It's kind of like the ultimate cop gun look! I have a 4inch tapered barrel Md 10 in nickel that dates to around '76 or '77. It's one of my favorites.
