Cokes or not????
I was just told some bad news today that my model 29 (no dash) does not have coke grips. I will attach 2 pictures and ask for your comments. Can you please straighten this question out.
Thanks in advance.

Do you have a side view? Cokes checking covers a larger area than the targets.

They look like the correct Special Targets (S&W terminology) to me.

The checkering on the grips tell the tale. Special Targets (thanks SP!) have a much larger checkered area than the standard Target grips. From what we can see of them they look right. Side pics will let us confirm though.

cokes
From looking at those pictures, mine do look like cokes as the checkered pattern is the same as the coke picture and not like the target picture. Great info though and thanks. I am still up in the air about this.

Look at the bottom of the grips--Cokes are true ovals, while Targets are flattened ovals and "blockier".

I'd like to see the bottom view. The chackering looks right to me for Cokes, especially the size of the diamond, but I was expecting more palm swell.

Cokes on the left, Targets on the right. Unmistakable.

The stocks on your Model 29 are correct. Collectors refer to them as coke bottle stocks. S&W described them as Special Oversize Stocks made of Goncalo alves. They were used on the 44 Magnum from 1956 until being phased out in 1966. It is true the palm swell and flare at the bottom were less pronounced over time, but the main feature of coke bottle stocks is the larger area of checkering.
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Bill

Better take a third look. Counting from the point of the center diamond to the back is five checks. Non cokes only have three.

So Mr. Dwfan, are you confirming that my grips are cokes? I am a bit confused when you state "better take a third look". Seems to me the overwhelming consensus is that these grips are in fact cokes.
I see you do say I have the proper number of "checks" to be cokes.I am hoping your comment was meant for another comment in this thread that had a different impression of the grips.
Thanks much

You " have" cokes
That huge checkering field is a dead give away

Those are Cokes, diamond targets have a much, much smaller portion that is checkered.
More importantly, Doc44 said so, that is good enough for me.

Thanks to all
Appreciate all the input on this thread especially the comical ones. Now if I can talk DWFAN into refurbishing these grips, I will be a happy camper. The front lower left ends need some attention by someone other than me. I see DWFAN's work is what they need.

A pair of coke bottle stocks very similar to yours on a Model 29 shipped in early 1961.
