Default S&W MODEL 30-1, serial number

I just inherited a S&W MODEL 30-1 .32 S&W long 4 inch barrel serial number H57XXX. It is blued and looks brand new, any idea on year manufactured and approx value? Thanks....Also, will it only chamber 32 S&W long or will it handle other .32 loads? I've got .38 spl revolvers, but never .32.

Likely manufacture date of 1972, according to SC of S&W 3rd.
I'm not sure on value, maybe $450 or so.
As to cartridges that'll work, both the .32 S&W and .32 S&W Long, and if you can find any, .32 Colt New Police.
Probably what you'll find is the S&W Long will be available, where the others aren't.
I'd definitely find some ammo and shoot it though.

Thanks for the reply. I thought of selling it as it has probably never been fired, but then remember my .38 Colt Detective Special I inherited that I sold for $750 because it was never fired and didn't want to put any wear and tear on it. I really wish I still had it. Guess I'll enjoy this and the 38 S&W Iver Johnson top break revolver that came with it. It had a box of .38 Colt NP with it.

You won't have any trouble finding ammo online. You can get LRN or FMJ in .32 Long.

I don't put the .32 S&W through my Model 31 (square butt version of yours). I always use the Longs. Just the way I was raised, I guess.

Enjoy it. Should be a hoot with the long barrel.

Have you ever had a range not let you use LRN? They seem the most prevalent.

I truly don't intend this to come across as smart aleck-y, but I couldn't resist...

The only range we have up here is "Open Range." The seven ranchers whose stock roam here in summer don't care for any lead -- jacketed or otherwise -- being fired into the herd.

Try Midway USA for jacketed ammo.

That is about the safest solid projectile and there should be no restriction on using it. Some ranges ban steel jacketed (armor piercing?) and tracer ammo, the former due to excess stress on the backstop and the latter due to the fire risk.

I picked some up from Georgia Arms at the last gun show. I paid $24 for 100GR JHP. I know they sell on line, but I don't know if it'd be worth it depending on shipping charges. Shoot it and enjoy.

Just called my local range and they do not allow LRN ammo to be used because the lead filters get clogged and have to be changed more frequently and it is a big expense.

I called Georgia Arms and they had that load but only in reloads. Would that load actually expand out of a 4 inch barrel?
