Default Info on 3 inherited S&W pistols

I inherited 3 pistols from my father. I would like any pertinent information on them, year made, etc. I am certainly keeping them, but need to know values of each so that I can compensate my two sisters in the interest of keeping things equal. All 3 have very nice finishes, and have been shot only occasionally.

Blued Model 36, 1 7/8", J262445, 38 spcl.

Nickel Model 36-1, 3", J436630, 38 spcl., natural finish ivory inlay in grips

Blued Model 58, 4", N54996, .41 Mag.

41 was an Amarillo San Francisco and San Antonio issue weapon in the 70's.

I ran into a pair of 36's(Click the link) few months ago at my lgs. One blue, one nickel. He offered $1200 for the pair and I didn't take it. One week and they were gone. I'd guess the 58 at $600-700.

Awesome guns. The two 36s appear to be in near perfect condition. Hard to tell regarding the 58. We can help you more if you can tell us if any of these guns have original boxes, papers and tools. The 58 has the potential to be the most valuable. Do you have the original grips/stocks? They can add significantly to the value.

The S&W model 58 was introduced as a police sidearm, and was most likely used by the Amarillo, San Francisco, and San Antonio police departments.

You could check GB to get an idea of what people hope to sell their revolvers for, but in my opinion, many of the asking prices for previously owned firearms is overly inflated. I won't suggest values, since my frugality would probably offend people.

Have the 3 original boxes, didn't look inside for any tools yet. I know he had the original grips, and am certain he would have kept them (Dad was like that), but not done going through boxes in storage room where the gun stuff was kept. I'd say for value estimates "yes" on the grips. The condition of the 58 is really very nice as well, blueing looks like new everywhere.

If you have the box, and original grips for the Model 58, that is the most valuable of the three. All three are sought after.

The Model 58 was a gun that at the time, never caught on huge and was not as popular as other S&W models.

Now, the Model 58 is a cult gun, especially for people that hand load.

With the Grips and Box, and other goodies, you have a valuable gun.

I would value it at $850.00

For the model 36's, I would value them at $400 each.

Very popular and very carryable revolvers, even to this day.

Your dad had some good taste.

The model 58 was issued by those agencys in the 70s. The SA ones had " San Antonio Police" rolled on barrel. Amarillo was officer purchase thu department no specal markings. SFPD and Nevada State Police I only heard of never saw an example.

I'm sorry you lost your father.

Be persistent hunting for the .41 Magnum's original wood stocks. That variation of Magna stocks with the rounded bottom edges were only used on Models 58 and 520 neither of which were made in large quantities. They would be expensive to replace.

Otherwise, you inherited some nice S&Ws, especially the .41 Magnum.

For some off the wall reason my thought was you were referring to a Railroad that had issued them to it's police/security force. I even googled it that way before I typed the message. Now it's all clear to me...........
Thanks, hardcase60

From doing google searches... it looks like the years they were made are as follows.

J262445 ~ 1975
J436630 ~ 1976
N54996 ~ 1972

That about right? Corrections?

I would put the blue 2” model 36 at $350 to $400. The nickel 3’ 36-1 at $450 to $500. You can add $50 to $100 to each with the box and tools.

No idea on the model 58.

Sorry about your father, he had great taste in guns.
The prices you got on the 36's are on the money. The 58 you have was not a police issued weapon or it would be marked SFPD on it or San Antonio on the gun.
The 58 is worth the most of the three but should have original wooden grips. With correct grip and box the 58 is around $850 or more like Tom R said.

OK I'll toss in my estimate. With box and original stocks I would value the 58 at 750.00 to 900.00 the blue 36 between 500.00 and 600.00 the nickle 36 about the same maybe a bit more. This all depends on your area.Your Dad left you a nice start to collecting all things S&W.
