Nickle 27-2
I acquired this 27-2 today. Was curious as to approx how many were produced in nickel with 8 and 3/8 inch barrel? Has the 3T's and in beautiful condition. Thanks for any info.

Neat gun. I'll bet that set you back. They say that approximately 10% of all post-war Smiths were finished in nickel, but it can vary a lot by model and by year. For example, it seems like all the M29's were nickel judging by what you see out these days. Nickel was discontinued around 1992. The claim was made that they were not selling well enough to justify continued production. Personally, I really like nickel. The nickel guns you see for sale seem to always be in better condition than the blue ones, probably because they were bought to put up in the sock drawer because they were so pretty.

I'm not sure what's going on but the 8 3/8" barrels were the red headed step child no one wanted them so the prices were lower?
Personally I like the 4" barrels to 8 3/8" barrels

The 4" was produced for the shortest amout of time. That's not to say it's the most desired barrel length though....

Most of the guys here perfer the 4" barrels. The rarest barrel length is 5"?
I shoulder holster from 5 1/2", 6", 6 1/2", 7 1/2", 8 3/8", to 10 1/2" barrels.
Any n frame in nickel gets my vote.

The longer the barrel the less popular. I have also heard 1/10th were in nickel so a long barrel in nickel near bottom of most "want lists."
But I like mine...

About a year or so ago, my LGS had a Md 29-2 just like yours with box, tools and papers at what I thought was a fair price. Wow, all that nickel, it was gorgeous! Didn't have enough cash at the time but now wish I had put it on lay-a-way! Congratulations on getting yours.

When I got into shooting in the 1970's, the 8-3/8 inch barrel was THE one everybody wanted. 4 inchers, especially .44 and .41 Magnums, tended to sit in dealers' displays longer. This seemed to be because the common uses for them were handgun hunting and target shooting. Concealed carry wasn't much of a consideration back then as so few jurisdictions permitted it.
Now, the shoe's on the other foot and everybody seems to want the shorter barrels more.
This seems odd with the big guns, as hardly anybody makes a habit of consistent concealed carry with N frames. A lot of people have tried it, but my guess is people like to have the capability but not actually use it.
Nickel isn't really popular here. I got a pretty good deal on my nickel, 8-3/8 inch Model 27-2 because the dealer was tired of looking at it!
