Default WTK: Diamond Grip question ??

Can anyone tell me when Smith transitioned away from using
the diamond target grips on N frame revolvers. I have a late
"S" serial number model 29 and wanted to know which grip is correct for it ? Was there a time line or serial # cutoff when they changed to the later grip ?
Thanks for any/all help or suggestions.

I have read the directive came out in June 1966. I dont believe there is a clean cut off date or serial number. Like all things S&W, it took time to use up old parts and start the new one. Some collectors I know use a window of 1967 to 1968. Even then there could have been diamond and non diamonds grips in the fitting room. Sorry for sketchy answer.

Rule of thumb if you have an S numbered 29 it would normally call for N target ( Coke type ) grips. Later ones may or may not. A serial number would help.

For whatever its worth. . . .I have a 29-2 6.5 inch barrel with S sn (299XXX) which I think is 1967 or maybe early 1968. It has rosewood diamond targets, not cokes, which I believe are original to the gun. I usually assume stocks without the diamond to be post 1968 although there probably are exceptions and probably some without diamonds before 1968.

The directive (#1032) to delete the diamond around the escutcheon and nut on NT and KT stocks was issued on December 28, 1967. However, it took over a year to deplete the supply of diamond targets. Generally, the last N-frame revolvers to be made with diamond targets shipped in very early in 1969 and have a serial number in the S300000 range. All 29-2s in the S315000 range or higher I have owned or seen shipped in 1969 with non-diamond target stocks if that helps.

Coke bottle stocks were phased out in place of diamond target stocks beginning in early 1966 and were completely replaced by mid-1966.

Below is a photo of S316488 shipped on August 19, 1969 with its original stocks.

Bill, thank you for a definitive clarification. I guess I was off.
