S&W Model 57 no dash 4'' ported barrel
I recently saw a blue model 57 that had been magna ported. The gun was in imaculate condition. Could the porting have been done at the factory? I have looked in the standard catalog and have not seen any reference to this being a factory option. Serial number was N5xxxxx series.

Mag-Na-Port is a trademark process.
While Smith and Wesson has sent many different runs of revolvers to Mag-Na-Port, the Factory also does their own in house porting. These two styles of ports are visually different.
If that firearm was Mag-Na-Ported, odds are a revolver of that age was ported after purchase. This was not that common of a thing for the factory to do back in the late 70s.
A Smith and Wesson Historical letter might give you better insight on that feature

It would not have come from the factory Magna ported in all likelihood.
How much do they want for it?

Not factory. Reduce value by 25%.

S&W Model 57 no dash 4'' ported barrel
Thank you gentlemen, for your answers, to my question. If I purchase it, I will request a letter to confirm. The man that has the gun is both a collector and dealer. The last couple of guns I purchased from him were from his personal collection (Mod 610 5", gun only and Mod 57 6", LNIB). This particular 57 has flawless target grips and is in a wood presentation box, with tools but no papers. He wants $ 900 plus tax. That one is on his books.

$900 with the box and papers is fair for it. If it was not Magnaported, it would be a $1200 - $1400 gun.
Here is the thing though, it is Magna-ported, so it is not super collectible, yet, since it is like new, you probably won't fire it, and make it a shooter.
So you have to ask yourself, is it worth dropping $900 on a safe queen that is not as collectible as other S&W guns?
Or, do you keep the $900 and look for a shooter, or add a few hundred more to your funds and find a collection gun.
If you make it a shooter, problem solved, but that is what you need to ask yourself.
I have held two 41 Magnums somewhat recently. A Perfect model 58, and a Magna ported model 57. I wanted to say I'll take it, but I knew I would not shoot them, so I passed and spent my money elsewhere.

S&W Model 57 no dash 4'' ported barrel
Tom, Thank you for your assessment and advise.
It is good to converse with someone from Connecticut. I was born and raised in the Waterbury area. I visited this past December but unfortunately, it was for the passing of my brother. I will be returning again in July. This time I hope to make some time for gun shopping. Previously I have visited Hoffman's, Newington Gun Exchange, and Jim's Collectibles & Firearms to name a few. If you have any recommendations I would love to hear about them.
I normally fire all of the guns I purchase. The only exception is those older pieces that appear unfired or new. I have only been into hand guns for about four years. I handle them as carefully as possible and I keep them clean and lubed. Like most people, I have to budget myself, but I do put a priority, on good Smith's when possible!

I have a model 57 that is magna ported. With some Hogue grips it is a lotta fun to shoot. That price is about what I paid for mine. It is the one gun I won't ever part with. You got a keeper.
