Default Model 64 with a D suffix serial number?

I have what I thought was a model 64 until I looked up the serial number. The book I have does not show a "D" suffix serial number for that model. Can I have something else? The box that came with it shows it as being a 64 model.

I have an early Model 64 with the tapered barrel. It's serial number is D598xxx. So the book, while good, is not always 100%.

BTW, the Model number is stamped on the frame inside the yoke (visible when you swing open the cylinder).

Does it look like this (except for the bobbed hammer)?

Just to be clear and not to be pedantic (the title of the thread confused me!) --
The D is added at the front of the s/n so it is a prefix.
If it had been added at the end it would be a suffix.

Yes, it's a Model 64, with the earlier std. barrel. Most have the heavy barrel option.

The SS Model 66 Combat Magnum and Model 64 were S&W's first regular cataloged K frame revolvers and were first offered in 1970.
The SS Model 67 followed in 1972.

You have an early version from around 1972-73 with the smaller "Tapered barrel" profile, later versions of the Model 64 have the Heavy barrel profile like their .357 Magnum twin Model 65.

IIRC the tapered barrel is gone by the mid 70's slowly supplanted by the HB Model 64 making them a bit more collectible IMO.

Now we know exactly what you have and it's a gem! Plus you have box and tools and maybe papers too! The Md 64 with tapered barrel is a classic. It has the vintage "cop gun" look that I really like along with being a very accurate gun too! I love fixed sight revolvers.

Thanks everyone for the help. I have already learned a lot. The papers and tools are in the box and the box is still in fairly good shape. The gun appears to be in real nice condition. Any idea on value?

$500.00+ in my area; it is difficult to find a battered S&W 10 for under $350.00 in these parts. I gave just under $400.00 for this one two years ago with no papers and an incorrect box.

Your gun was made in the 72-73 period. By the mid-70s all the 64s were heavy barrel models. BTW, nice gun.
