Default Time to do it again? M27 appreciation.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love all things 27. I have an RM, a couple of pre-model 357s from the early to mid 1950s, a 27 and several 27-2s. Oh, throw in a first year Highway Patrolman as an associated piece. Still kicking myself for passing on the 3.5" 27-1 I saw in a pawn shop. None are collector guns and this does not constitute a collection by any means. I bought them to shoot which I do regularly.

My ode to the Model 27...

A 5" nickel 27 found in a Seattle pawnshop for $295. Hadn't gone far in almost five decades as it shipped to Tacoma.

A 27-2 c. 1968. A forum member contacted me when he saw it in a local gun shop priced at $375. I called and bought it unseen. No regrets.

Found in local gun shop for $350. Appeared unfired. A 27-2 c. 1973. I like the smooth trigger. When someone says the finish on 1970s S&Ws isn't very good I break this one out. Came in the wooden box.

When I had an FFL in 1989 I got an ad from a distributor offering Florida Highway Patrol 27-2s for $215. All 5" in nickel, I ordered one and received a new, unused revolver. One of 500 shipped in 1977.

Looked for a long 27 in nickel for a while and finally bagged this one on Gunbroker for $321. New in box (wooden case) with all documents, etc.

Post up your 27s.

My contribution to this thread. Its a little on the new side, being from 2007.
But I have really enjoyed it. I did change the grips out for something more traditional.

I've shown these before. A 1950 factory nickel pre-27 with
the 3.5" barrel and aged ivory magnas; and a factory original
1957 pre-27 with the factory special order 4 inch barrel. I'm
looking for a pre-27 with the 5 inch barrel in nice shooter grade
condition.

Ya know! If a serious poll were run to determine the favorite all-time N frame, especially from those who have had the long term good fortune to handle and shoot them all, I believe the 5" Mod. 27 would win by a landslide.

I've had that good fortune and it's no secret I find the early 27's, especially the 5", head and shoulders above all the rest. The same opinion commonly holds true of many shooters and collectors I've known through many years.

LONG LIVE THE MODEL 27!!

We've seen a beautiful collection of 357s posted here but I didn't see a 27-2 with 6.5" barrel and full target options . . . so am adding this one.

I don't know the history but it do know it shipped in June '72 . . . late for a 6.5" barrel and uncommon with a ramp front sight. If original to the gun, the smooth target stocks, target hammer, target trigger and RR/WO sights make me suspect it was special ordered as shown.

I have managed to accumulate and hang onto a .357-through-Model 27-2 in each barrel length (3-1/2, 4, 5, 6, 6-1/2 and 8-3/8), but have never been able to find an older nickel one with the blue front sight and ramp. I have always thought that combination looks very classy, nicer and more practical to shoot than one with the integral and nickel sights.

I gotta say, I think the shortest ones look the deadliest (!) but if they all had to go but one, my blue 5 incher would be the last. Or, mebbe I'd have my 6-1/2 inch 8 shot 27-7 cut down to 5 inches.

Or... Never run out of great choices with the big S&W .357.

Thanks to you folks who take such nice pictures and post them. I got a new digital camera for Christmas but nobody around here carries film for it...

I love the Model 27 and is the first pistol I ever bought back in 1974 when I turned 18 (which was the legal age to buy a pistol back then). Anyways, here is my little collection of 27's. Some are 27-2 models and a few are newer. But all are great shooters.

My original pistol I bought in 1974, a 5" barrel 27-2 in nickel It has these Cocobolo Ahrends on it now:

This one is my never shot 4" 27-2 I bought a few years ago. Still haven't run any rounds down the pipe on her and it's the only one that's never been shot I own:

My 3 1/2" 27-2 I bought off GB 1 1/2 years ago. She's a shooter grade pistol and isn't the best looking in the world, but she shoots great and I'm happy with her. The Goodyears have since been changed out for a proper set of Ahrends grips and she looks much better:

Next up is my 5" barrel 50th Anniversary 27-3. I bought it a few years ago and it looked ANIB and I've shot around 100 rounds out of it:

Next up is my 6 1/2" barrel "Outnumbered" 27-5 I found on GB a few years ago at a really good price. It's unusual in that while it's a 1991 built pistol it has a recessed cylinder but no pinned barrel like a transition pistol, but the cylinder has the long cylinder stop notches like the modern pistols have. It now wears a set of Cordia wood Ahrends instead of the stock grips in this pic:

Finally, while this one isn't a 27, it's the stainless steel kissing cousin, the 627 Pro. I got it in April of this year and it's a real hoot to shoot. It doesn't look as good as the traditional 27 in my opinion, but 8 shots definitely trumps looks It is still wearing the Goodyears, but I foresee a set of Ahrends in the future:

I still want to collect a 6" barrel and a 8 3/8" barrel 27 for my little collection, but that all depends on work and available money.

OK to slip a 27-9 in here? I know it really doesn't fit the time slot, but it's the only 27 I've got now.

It is a good shooter.

Wow! Maybe it's where I live or maybe I just wasn't paying attention, but I've never seen M27's out for sale. Back in the 1970's and early 1980's I purchased N frame Smiths in 41, 44, and 45 plus a 44 snub. All were in presentation boxes except the snub. We do have the M28's around here and I have a few. I guess I was just blind to the M27's. Maybe I just couldn't figure out why you needed such a big gun for such a small caliber. I wish I had one now. . .still looking.

M 27-2 "nothing special" but it's awesome to me.... The model 27s are just beautiful guns!
