I am trying to find the year of a Model 686 I recently purchased. The serial number is ACMxxx. Any help would be appreciated!

It's a 6", and there is no dash.

Your 6" 686, as well as the 4", were the first two barrel length offerings by S&W on these brand new "L" frame guns. They were intended to fill the niche between the smaller "K" frame and the larger "N" frame guns. They were an immediate success that continues to this day.

The two 686's below are very early production. They are the first revolvers I had seen delivered with the new "speed- loader" cutouts on the target grips (not shown) and possessing the full lug barrel.
