Default 15-2 correct grips?

I just picked up a super nice 15-2, serial number K7688XX. It's wearing after market grips. Which grips would have been original the diamond or non diamond grips? I'm not sure what year it was made and even then when the diamond grips stopped being used.

K768xxx is 1967, right on the cusp of the change from diamond to non-diamond stocks. If I was forced to guess, I'd probably say the odds are in favor of diamond Magna stocks. Some Model 15-2 Combat Masterpiece revolvers shipped with target stocks and, again, it seems likely they would have been of the diamond variety at this serial number. But perhaps not.
If it were mine, I would seek to put diamond Magna stocks on it. They will look nicer and you can make the argument that they likely duplicate what came with it.

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, your serial number shipped in 1967. Diamond grips were deleted in 1968, so yours is right on the cusp. My guess would be that your 15-2 came with diamond grips as the 15-3 was introduced in 1967. I have a 15-3 shipped 1970. Came with non diamond grips numbered to the gun.

I agree with Jack and would look for diamond magnas.

This Model 15-2 shipped in 1966 and came with GA diamond target stocks, as shown.

My issued weapon was a 4" Model 15 for years and next to the Model 19 it's one of Smith's best.

Thanks for the information guys. It's easily 98% and locks up tight. The only minor negative was the after market grips.

I have a set of grips that I believe are the proper grips for your gun. They are the shallow shoulder diamond magnas. They are pictured in the 1896-1961 S&W forum Page 2 under my thread titled My three 5 screws. They are the ones listed as M&P on the far left. I might part with them for the right offer (fair price).

One of the main reasons I bought this particular 15-2 was the diamond target stocks. I don't know if they came on the gun, but if not, they were probably added shortly. For some reason they're the most comfortable grips I've ever owned. They feel just a little slimmer maybe...I can't really put my finger on it. Maybe a previous owned sanded on them or something.

The gun itself was (S/N K679203) was made in 1966 and has the target hammer, trigger, and trigger stop. It has a few scratches and dings accumulated over the years. It also has about the nicest trigger of any revolver I've owned. Again, no idea if it's been worked on, or worn on. Timing, lock up, etc...all spot on.

I go back and forth on which I like best, the 15 or the 19..(we'll leave the 18 out of the discussion, it will just make my head hurt). I think it depends on which one I've been holding, shooting or just thinking about. Right now, the 15 is ahead.

Have Combat Masterpiece K-708518 shipped March 1967 and K-766460 Shipped Nov 1967 and both have their original Non Diamond Magna stocks .

While anything is possible with S&W I would bet your 15-2 serial K7688?? also came with the then new non diamond Magnas .

If special ordered with checkered target stocks IMO they would have likely been made of Walnut with the diamond center like the ones pictured above.

Here are some pics. Perhaps the more knowledgeable will say if they are the grips you are looking for and a value. These are not serialed, stamped or pencil as far as I can see. The far left grips are the ones I am offering. They are pictured on the gun L&R view.

It seems the offer for the grips was withdrawn, but a couple folks have told me the non diamond grips would be the correct ones
