The model 10 I was issued a life time a go. I was disappointed at first because most recruits got BNIB Revolvers. But this gun's action was smooth as silk. This is basically what it looked liked then. We transitioned to Autos about 6 year later.

I was issued a 10-6 in 1979, carried until 1984 when we transitioned to the 586. Could not afford to buy back my 10-6 at the time, but got another about 30 years later. Could not believe I went that long without one!

When the Agency I was with many moons ago began furnishing service revolvers (prior each officer was required to furnish his own) it was Model 64s. In a short time the issue went to Model 64 H.B.s. I was last in line so I was issued a first issue pre-owned Model 64 pencil barrel. I was disappointed until qualifications. That pencil barrel was a "Tack Driver" and shot better scores then the newer H.Bs. I NEVER requested a newer H.B. Model 64 as I was a HAPPY CAMPER !

I paid $75 for mine. Lot of money then. Dinner or a couple tanks of gasoline now.

Just fired my 10-8 with its new shoes on. Pulled one just a touch.

Model 13. Converted to 39-2's, then to P220.

I was issued squat. I carried my service-issued 1911 .45 ACP.

It worked. It still does. It is now my only safe queen. Comes out on Memorial Day or Veteran's Day, if I can manage it, and gets slobbered over by the youngsters, but handled only by those in service before July 1974, or present day sandbox kids.

I was a USAF cop and was normally given a Victory Model, as we were short of Combat Masterpieces then. I could get a .45 auto on request, and often did, worn in a personally owned Jordan style holster.

I worried a lot about the weak M-41 .38 ammo, until the NCOIC took unit funds and bought some .38 Hi-Velocity 150 grain FMJ ammo, off-base. This was probably .38-44 ammo, but safe to fire in K-frame guns in modest quantities. More would loosen the guns too soon. But we practiced with .38 wadcutters. This was as good as we could legally carry in the military, due to the Hague Accords. I still had more faith in the .45 ammo. Thankfully, never had to shoot anyone. Never had to even use my nightstick. I was lucky.

My first duty gun was a Model 10HB. I carried it until I changed departments and then went with a Model 19.

My first duty gun was a Essex framed Gov't Model .45, privately owned. My first duty revolver was a S&W 1917, followed soon after by a M27 converted to .44 Special. The only issued weapons I had came from the closet full of confiscated handguns the department owned and they were almost always big bores.

The only times I carried a .357 was when we went to the range and used .38 special reloads. The only .38s I owned were snubbies, used as back-up guns. The exception was a 4" Colt Police Positive Special I had for a while.

First duty gun was an issued Colt Trooper MKIII 4" (1980)
In about a year, the department transitioned to M66's. 4" for uniform, 2.5" for Detectives/Plainclothes.

Bought my M66 when the next transition went to M1076's. (1989-90)

I bought my M66 for ~$200 (IIRC). Just wish they hadn't electro-penciled a case number on the grip frame from an incident it brought me out of. Oh well.

They gave me my M4566, aka, 'the boat anchor' upon retirement.

My first duty gun was borrowed from my dad. It's a 1952 made pre-15 that I carried until I could afford a new revolver of my own. That Combat Masterpiece is superbly accurate, and resides in the highest honor in my safe today. It still gets taken out about once a year and gets a few wadcutters pushed through it. It's an absolutely great firearm.....

A S&W four inch 686 marked BP-1, the Border Patrol's version of the CS-1. Wasn't new but still came with the box. Issues with Pachmeyee Grippers.

S&W Model 39 (nothing) issued at the Illinois state police academy in 1968, followed by an S&W 439 in about 1980 and a S&W 5904 in the late '80s...

LOL, Uncle Ed, we had the Sam Browne & cross-draw flap holster until the mid-70s...I carried my spare magazine in my pocket in a felt holder, so that the magazine wouldn't tear my uniform pants...I had 11 cruisers from 1969-1993, mostly Plymouths & Dodges, one Olds (1968), one Ford ('79 LTD II) and one Chevy (1988)...

I made certain to buy the 586, though - around 1990 when we transitioned to the Glock 17. Paid $125.00 for a 586 no dash. I was a given my G23 Gen 4 upon retirement. It was issued to me new 3 months prior.

First duty gun was Detroit PD's five inch nickel model 10-5. Had to turn it in when I left but later bought another one which I still have.
Next department issued me a 4 inch nickeled 19-3 that I later bought for $150 when we went to the Glocks.

Like Texas Star, I was Military Cop before the KCSO. I was USN & was issued a 10-6 HB daily, I had a favorite that I was usually able to get my hands on. We also were issued the 130 Grain FMJ's, but most of the guys on my squad would change to 125 Grain JHP after daily inspection by the Master Chief ... ;o)

My 1st Civilian issue was a 4" 19-3 with the Federal 129 Grain Hydra Shok, l quickly went to a personally owned Essex Framed 1911 like Muley Gil. I carried the 185 Grain Super Vel JHP that I purchased & successfully used it in a OIS in 1986. By about 1991 I was having problems with my hands so I went to an issued Model 59 with issued 9BPLE, I eventually went to a personally owned Glock 19 with the issued Federal 9BPLE.

In 1992-93 the KCSO transitioned away from personally owned weapons, issuing Glock 22's & 23's with Winchester 180 Grain Ranger. I was issued & carried a Glock 23 from May 1993 until I retired in January 2001. When I made the transition to the Glock 23 I was able to buy both of my issued weapons, the Model 59 was $200 & the Model 19 was $175. The price of both included Leather & magazines/Speed loaders .... ;o)

My first issued duty handgun in 1981 was a Model 15, probably a 15-2, which was in a poor state of existence, due to long use and a ****** refinish. The department allowed personally owned guns to be used, S&W, Colt or Ruger, blue finish or stainless steel, .38 or .357. I carried my own Model 66. The department began transition to semiautomatics in 1991, beginning with the Model 4006, then brand new, both gun and caliber. Again, personally owned weapons were allowed, from a much larger list of makers, in 9mm, .40, 10mm and .45 ACP, and I carried a Colt 1911 of one sort or another until retirement in 2014.

The department traded in our old .38's without offering the deputies to buy them. One local dealer ended up with a lot of them, but mine wasn't among them.

If you ever find serial number K522975, with "SL Co SO # 72" stamped neatly on the left side of the frame, I'll buy it.

I am waxing nostalgic in my old age. Either that or sliding into senility, as my ex-wife says.

My first duty weapon was a S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman .357 Mag. with a four-inch barrel. I wish I still had it.

First 3 years ('69-72) in D-15, then sub-post 5-A until we became D-17 in 1980.

My first duty weapon was a personally owned model 28 6" Later when the sheriff said no 6" barrels I carried a 4" model 13. My last year we went to carrying county issued 4" model 66s

I was offered a roughly used M10 by my agency, but I opted for my personally owned 686. I also carried my personally owned snubby 66 when off duty or when on foot patrol in the backcountry. I managed to hold onto the 66, which is still my favorite wheel gun.

I started off carrying my dad's (pre-15) Combat Masterpiece. In the mid-70's the "one-to-have" was the "new" Model 19, so I grabbed one of those and put the K38 in my safe. Later tried a 39 dash-nothin', but went back to the 19.

After a transfer to different agency was issued a Model 64. They were buying those to issue to everyone, who had until that point carried whatever they wanted - what a disaster. They had real QC issues at that time (early 1979) so we gave them all back and issued Ruger 4" .357's in Stainless (can't remember the model number/name).

As the armorer/instructor I was "allowed" (meaning they didn't ask, and I didn't tell) to carry my personal 586 4" which was the sweetest revolver I have ever owned. Still my favorite wheel gun. Has a Jim Hudson action job meaning it's smooth as frog's hair, with SA slide spring and internals honed to a mirror finish, engine turned and smooth radiused SA trigger, engine turned hammer sides (makes it beautiful) and a set of Pachmayr rubber grips,

Has about 20k rounds through it and still a tack driver, and still nice and tight.

Not my first duty weapon, but the last duty revolver before we transitioned to semi-autos back in 1985. First (starting in 1975) was a 4" Python, with a 6" Python & 6" Model 66 in between. Still have the 686 & it's still wearing the old Hogue monogrips I put on it back in 1981. Back in those days there were no rubber ones, only the hard plastic version, which took a much better beating than the original target stocks would have. Still looks & shoots great and favored over my Highway Patrolman.

First issued handgun was a 681......still have it......started carrying it again recently with the Remington 125 JHPs in 357......I feel very well armed with it.....

geez do i feel lucky. i own most of the mentioned S&W revos, but first and only issue was a Sig P226. i learned in CC on an old rattle trap model 10 4". thing was however, deadly accurate. love the 10. one of my favs is an ordered (by a former fed) 5" model 10 pencil barrel. didn't even know they made 'em!

My department issued 4 inch model 19's when I came on in 1980 and that is what I carried until we transitioned to 5906's in 1990. Could have bought my revolver for around $120 but I didn't...wish I had. But the off duty 2 1/2 model 66 I bought a few years after I started is still mine and is my favorite gun to own.

PJO, when I started we had Ford LTD II's. Black and sitting in the low bucket seats working 3rd shift I could hardly see the front of the squad. And two red bubbles on top...memories.

66-2 4" issued to me in 1986. I was NIB, and so was it. Got to buy it for $175 in 1991 when we went Glock. Unfortunately, the box had disappeared by then. One of my most prized possessions.

S&W model 10 4" heavy barrel, Purchased from the NYPD equipment section for $175. Was a pretty good deal at the time. Had a choice of that or a Ruger security six with a 38 spl. cylinder. A lot of guys bought the Ruger so they could change out the cylinder to the .357 mag one when they retired.

Magnaported Smith & Wesson Model 29 four inch (custom round-butted by Jim Stroh; super action job by Ed Pitt) with factory smooth rosewood grips and loaded with Winchester 240 grain JHP and carried in basketweave Jordan Border Patrol holster. Recoil and recovery time meant nothing back then. Fired over 10,000 full power lead 240 grain lead reloads in that wonderful revolver (and over 8,000 in my 6.5 inch Model 29). Sold both prior to last assignment in Germany due to stringent new import laws.

LOL, the '79 LTDII (351 2bbl.) was the worst cruiser that I was issued during my ISP career...I got it second hand...the original "owner" had stuffed a short piece of 2x4 between the seat cushion & the backrest of the bucket seat (who knows from what Ford parts bin those bucket seats came from?)...with a tall light bar on the roof, the "good" ones would do 90 mph wide open, the "bad" ones would top out at 85 mph; quite disappointing, as my first cruiser was a secondhand '68 Olds Delmont 88 (455 engine, 4bbl., dual exhaust, drum brakes, bias ply tires) She go, but she no stop !!

This 28-2 was my dad's rig when he joined Willingboro P.D. in 1970.

Like many of you, I first started carrying a Model 10 HB issued by the department. But, as soon as I could afford it, my first personally owned duty gun was my Model 581. Still own it today!

My first service revolver, back in '97, was a 4" 19-7. I accepted the job offer from the county and then drove to the gun shop to order the 19. Even though I had an old 10-5 that would've sufficed, finally getting a full time job seemed like a good reason to buy a new gun.

When I was a Reserve Deputy back in the 1970s (boy am I getting old) we had to buy our own weapon. Mine was a Colt Trooper as I couldn't afford an extra $60.00 for a Python at the time. Wish I would have kept it, but I sold it several years ago.

We had those when I was hired and it was my first cruiser, shared with 5 other guys! I remember trying to chase down a VW Beetle with it. I couldn't catch him until he stopped for a light. He was apologetic, didn't know I was chasing him! And the exhaust tone they made: "Fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft!"

My first duty weapon was a model 66. I had been involved in a shooting and it was still in the evidence room when we transitioned to a 6909 in 1989. I was carrying a second model 66 that had been issued to me at the time of the transition and was allowed to buy them both.... for $120.00 each. I had to get creative to come up with the money at that time with having two young kids. My starting salary in 1983 was $11,250 a year! I still have both of those 66's.

We were encouraged to carry a model 36 or 60 as a backup or off duty and they allowed us to purchase them through the department. I couldn't afford the 60 so I bought a new 36 for $150.00. The City took it out of my pay check over ten pay periods.

My first duty weapon belonged to my dad. It is a S&W 19-2 he purchased new in 1967. His close friend was the post master in our home town and received the revolver for him. 20 years later I carried it in the academy and for a while after graduation until I transitioned to the Beretta 92F. I never had to turn a screw on it, shot like a Smith was suppose to. It is secure in my safe and I wouldn't take anything for it.

Carried Sigs, Beretta, Smiths in between - last duty gun was S&W Model 65 with TDCJ

S&W model 19 (no dash), bought it NIB in 1971 for $125.00. Served me faithfully until 1987 when we transitioned to semi-autos. It has an honored place in one of my guns safes and will be passed along to my grandsons, hopefully not too soon.

Like Vice Unit, I was issued a new Model 10-6 HB. I was hired in Sept. 1972 and my salary was just under $7,000.00 a year. I had been working at The Allison (GM) Tank Plant by Cleveland Hopkins Airport and was making close to $14,000.00 a year, got laid off, went to work at Bendix in Elyria, got laid off, had back surgery, and worked at a gas station until finally getting hired by Elyria PD.

Things were a little rough for a while, but we did okay. My 1st off duty gun was a new Colt Det. Spl. that cost $98.00 and I had to put it on layaway.

My first duty weapon, issued in 1975, was a S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman 4". When empty it made a very efficient club.

Bought my Model 66 during the last week of the academy in Ft. Lauderdale in 1986. We had to carry .38 +P 125 gr. JHPs.

You guys keep talking about them Ford LTD IIs that were "slow". The last PD I worked at had a 1974 Chevrolet Bel-Air, with a 454 CI cop motor and cop everything thing else. I personally had it up to 145 mph (certified speedo), and wished it didn't have the Visi-bar on top, as I felt that slowed it down quite a bit. This was what we used in a small Texas town on those days. I can't believe a Highway Patrol would have something less for their Troopers, as our HP cars were quite powerful in that time period.......

L Pete, our bosses were on an economy kick with the '79 LTD IIs...my first cruiser was a '68 Olds (455, 4bbl. dual exhaust, etc.)...the ones with no lights on the roof would do about 130 (the speedo went to 120) and the speedo needle would just keep going toward the green arrow for the right turn signal...when I retired in '93, we were using the '91 Caprice with the hot (LT-1?) engine, although my ride at the time was an '88 Caprice with the 350 engine...
