Default 10-5 Dillemma

Saw a beautiful 10-5 with a Dxxxxxx serial number. Store wanted $450. Bluing was excellent, case colors on hammer were outstanding and the grips were pristine. Problem is I have a similar one but the grips on mine not as well preserved. Do I go back? Should I go back?

My current one

You could probably always get your money back later if you decide you don't want it. If you are on the fence, offer $400 just for the fun of it. They don't make them anymore you know. Besides, what better things do you have to do with $400 bucks?

Oh, and no turn line on the cylinder. It will be the most I've paid for any of my Smith Revolvers. I may just wait a week. It worked when I found a nice Model 34 last month for $500. I waited a week and it was gone!

Boy, if I took the time to seek the advice of a bunch of strangers every time I thought about buying a gun I wouldn't have time to get anything done.

I did from $500 to $400 plus the dreaded .0975 sales tax plus the $10 TBI fee. Hence $450 but hey if I don't spend it I've got a college student home for the summer who will.

Someone told me once, when dealing with wives and spending money, it's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

Boy, were they wrong.

Prices for clean S&W's keep going up and up. If you want the better gun, buy it and sell the more worn one you already have. Most of us on this site that have more than a few nice guns got there by trading up on occasion.

And your question is??? You have a nice one already and your
prospective purchase is about the same except that the grips are
slightly better so you have a big dilemma that you need help in
resolving? You are the only one that knows how much disposable
income you have, what you want to do with your guns, what your
preferences are regarding S&W revolvers and whether you should buy
another gun that is very similar to one you already have. Put your
big boy pants on and decide what to do with your money. There's
nothing wrong with having two or more of the same model of gun if
that's what you want. But if you must sell one gun to buy another
on the basics of a slight difference in grip condition of 40 yr old
revolvers then you don't actually have any dilemma. The 10-5
is a basic no frills working revolver, not a rare collectable.

This is why I posted. Benz, you're a man of wisdom. Thanks.

The recent thread by henry8734 about a $400 Model 10 got me wondering about this Model 10 I passed up buying. I went back and the same revolver is still there with a $399 "sale" tag. The intervening months have been hard on the old Girl. A gash in the grips, a scratch on frame and a pronounced turn line. So the pistol has been shown/handled a lot but still no buyers in this area at the $400 base retail price.

You got to ask yourself what you want the thing for. As has already been pointed out, the 10-5 is too common, so that, unless it is new or as new with all papers and box, this won't ever be a rare collectible before you die, and since this apparently isn't NIB, you'd be getting yourself another shooter.

So if that's what you want, point out to them how long it's been there, that they were willing to give it to you for 400, and the degrading that's happened since then, and tell them you'll buy it for 350. Then you'd be in very good territory price-wise.

I'm sure you've thought of this, but after six months of being on display the M10 is about in the same condition as the M10 you already have-or maybe even a little worse for wear. And the asking price is $50 less, probably to motivate a sale and not because of the wear caused by tire kickers. If you're interested make an offer.

There is nothing wrong with having a couple of M10s. I have 2 10-8s myself. Both are shooters and are used, no safe queens. I happen to like heavy barrel 10s and wouldn't rule out another at the right price.

Absolutely no law against owning two model 10-5s. Go for it!

I offered $350 last June when the gun was flawless. Now I wouldn't give $250.

Here is how I look at it, used police revolvers M-10s are advertised in Firearms news for $365, Then you have to pay shipping and a dealer to run it thru their FFl. Then you have a pistol with holster wear and who knows what else. If you want it I would get it In a year it will be worth more than you paid for it.
