Cool "Engine Cranking" Deluxe Texas Ranger - Just One More...

Texas Ranger Commemorative 19-3's really crank my engine... I love the slimmed trigger guard, the smooth back strap, the smooth wide target trigger and all of my TR Commemorative's have a beautifully polished deep blue that is as nice as any S&W (except perhaps the pre-war 357s and 22s). The Factory set 50 TR's aside for Deluxe custom engraving. The patterns on each of the 50 are unique and always well executed. I collect engraved guns and have a special affinity for the Deluxe TRs. A couple of months ago, I was able to purchase and photograph another one. This one has all the great TR features and an outstanding set of smooth TR target stocks.

So here she is (TR40):

One more of the 50 accounted for...

Thanks for letting me share,

The Deluxe Engraved ones are not seen often. I am lucky enough to have accumulated a few over the years - Here are links to two more of mine just for reference and comparison...

Thanks for sharing. Those are drop dead gorgeous (a compliment usually reserved for red headed women). What is not very pretty is the drool all over my keyboard. hardcase60

Whilst I am not inclined to buy engraved guns I do appreciate them. As a Texan I would indeed like to find the right TR. Yours is beautiful.

Very nice. But, why the slimmed down trigger guard? I don't think my fingers ever touch that part of the trigger guard on any revolvers I've shot.

Is it just esthetics? Or maybe Texas Rangers all have large fingers...

Please refresh my memory. Were all the guns engraved by the same person, or were there multiple engravers? Who was/were the engraver(s)?

There were at least two factory engravers who worked on the Deluxe TRs: Russ Smith and Tom Freyburger. TR 140 was for sure engraved by Tom Freyburger and I believe that TR 40 was also engraved by Tom. I believe TR 210 was engraved by Russ Smith (Tom said that he did not engrave it and he believed it was Russ' work).

This feature of the Texas Ranger Commemorative is often said to have been inspired by Ranger Capt. Manuel T. Gonzaullas aka "Lone Wolf." He used to slim the trigger guards on his 1911s this way back in the 1900s

I believe it was done to help with the fast draw. Bill Jordan used to slim the front of his trigger guards for this reason.

Commemoratives of any type aren't my thing, but I do appreciate the high quality engraving and the fact that the engravers could do their own thing in the execution.
I think that my bud still has his standard TR gun,but it's well worn from holster time from his armored car days.

Smile Consecutive Numbers

Thanks for all the comments. One of the things that is also special about this gun is that it completes my first consecutive SN set. The Texas Ranger Commemoratives were serial numbered with a TR prefix, starting with TR1. If I recall correctly all of the Deluxe versions were SN'd on the 10's (i.e. TR10, TR20, TR30, TR40, etc...). Eight or nine years ago, I picked up TR39, one that was early enough that it has S&W medallions on the stocks, rather than the special Texas Ranger star medallions.

When I had TR40 (the engraved one in the 1st post) out for photographing, I forgot to take a quick shot if it with TR39, but here they are together - adjacent SNs in adjacent photos...

TR39:

TR40:

Thanks for letting me share.

Well, TR39 is a great looking firearm. In fact, I think if I were offered 39 or 40, I'd choose 39. I prefer simplicity, I guess, but what a great finish on that firearm!
