Model 29-2 barrel length
I recently picked up a blued 29-2 with a barrel length of 5 3/4". This could be a short 6" but my understanding is they came in 4",some 5", 6 1/2" and 8 3/8. It's not been cut down . Sent off to S&W for history and will see what they say. Anyone come across one with that barrel length?

Did you measure the barrel from the muzzle to the front of the cylinder? Or from the muzzle to just the front of the frame?

Welcome! Factory barrel lengths often vary +/- 1/8" but 1/4" variations are often seen due to individual fitting variations. I would guess your model 29 will letter as a 6". Enjoy!

The 29-2 came with barrel lengths of 4, 5, 6, 6-1/2 and 8-3/8 inches. S&W barrel lengths often end up made just a smidge shorter than standard. A shortage of 1/8 of an inch isn't rare. Barrels longer than normal are much less common.

The letter will tell you that it is a 6". While 1/8" variation from nominal length is very common, it is not particularly unusual to find barrels that are 1/4" shorter than nominal. I had a 27-2 that measured 5 3/4" for awhile. I am buying a Model 12-? that is about 3 3/4". Haven't measured it but the shop has 3 Model 12's, a -2 and 2, -3s, all 4". There is about 5/16" variation among the three in barrel length!

Blue book states 6 1/2" for the 29-2 but no 6" barrel. Perhaps it is mistaken.

S&W went to 6" barrels late in the M29-2 production (1979). The M29-3 was introduced in 1983.

The bluebook is woefully inadequate when discussing S&W's. There are better references. The new (4th) edition of The Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wessons will be out soon. It will be a lot more accurate than the various price guides.

Took me a while to find a 6" -2. I prefer them to those with the extra half inch. I hope yours shoots and handles as well as mine does.

Seems like once a month or so somebody turns up a 5.75" S&W. Usually late 1970s early 1980s. Nothing is perfect.
