Model 13 no dash questions...
Good evening all,
I have a quick question, I have an opportunity to buy a 95% Model 13 no dash with a 3 inch barrel. It's a beautiful revolver. The seller wants $850 for it. I feel like that is priced higher then I was expecting, and just wanted some opinions on what you all thought.
Thanks for the help!
Joe

I'd say that price is just about right for today's market. The 3" model 13 commands a significant premium over the 4", and being in 95% condition only adds to that. $750-$800 would be ideal my opinion

I too believe that is too much money. You say the seller is asking $850, but is he willing to negotiate? Does it include the box & paperwork? If not, then I would probably pass on it, unless it was one of those things that I just couldn't live without. You could take the stance that you just spending that much too early. Someday that will probably seem like a great deal. There are others out there, though they are few and far between. I've really wanted one of those ever since I first saw "Silence of the Lambs". The right one has just never come along...............

There was no model 13; the first production versions were the 13-1. Also, I have not seen a 3" model 13 earlier than a -2. If it has a pinned barrel and a recessed cylinder it may have just missed having the "dash number" properly stamped, but it may also be a parts gun, and with neither feature it is more likely a -3 or 4.
Even if it is an original P/R 3", the asking price seems at the upper end or slightly high at present. Photos would help here.

Nice looking piece.
But I'm with Alan, it cannot be a Model 13 with no dash number. Those were never made.
I guess if we wanted to be clever, we could say the Model 13 "no-dash" was a Model 10-6 chambered for the .357 Magnum (this was the New York State Police prototype that became the Model 13-1). But even that would not be correct because the 10-6 was a three screw gun already.
The Model 13-1 was introduced in 1974.
Perhaps you could share the serial number from this one. Then we could estimate when it was made and help you decide what dash number should be on it. But I can tell you already that your picture shows that it is at least a 13-3.

And no. I would not pay $850 for that revolver. That is at least $200 too high, maybe $300.

It's a -3 or 4; the later features don't change it functionally and it looks to be a nice example, but agree with Jack's price range.

Yes. In the photo you can see it lacks the barrel pin and the rear face of the cylinder is not close enough to the recoil shield for the charge holes to be counter-bored. It is therefore at least a -3.

357magWheelGunner,
That is a truly nice looking specimen of the Model 13 -?, 3", RB. Secondly, I wish to thank all the learned forum members for their valued information on the 13's. That model is in the top 10 of my "Most Wanted" list. A search of the most prominent gun auction sites lists only three that I could locate. A breakdown on those listing would be lengthy, so I want do it. The closest one is is starting at $750.00 with no reserve. While listed as having no scratches, the pics indicate a slightly different story. Meanwhile back at the ranch, let's say you get that one for the base price, add the $25.00 shipping and what ever the transfer fees are in PA and you are at a $800.00 plus gun that may not be the condition of what you were holding in your hand. I don't disagree with the other posters that the gun is not worth the asking price, but the sellers are going to ask and sometimes get a higher price which then dictates the market. hardcase60

Jack - I retired from the NYSP. The 10-6 chambered for the 357 magnum was built for us, then S&W built the 13-1 for us. I have them both.

YES! New York State Police, NOT the NYPD. Sorry. Knew that; just in too big a hurry. I appreciate the correction.
Jack
I went back and fixed the error in my Post #6. Thanks again.

Buy it. I paid 625 for mine with cosmetic blemishes and don't regret it a bit
