Dallas PD at one time issued 649s, probably on a limited basis. It's unknown to me whether this was for general plainclothes duty or strictly undercover work. I'm aware of one such revolver that was issued to a vice sergeant.
I think other J-frames may have been issued as well at various times, but don't know this for a fact.
The Michigan State Police issued the a Bodyguard in blue finish with a stainless steel cylinder. It was to be carried as a backup to the holster gun in the uniform pants pockets which were reinforced. Jinks' book doesn't specify whether it was the steel frame M-49 or the aluminum frame Airweight M-38, and SCS&W III says both were made and sold to the Michigan Police Supply Co.
