model 27-2 with cobbled grip
Found a model 27-2 at a local gun shop. Good honest guys, have done work for me. The gun is a very clean model 27-2 serial n3328xx. It appears to be almost unused. No wear, not even a cylinder line. No papers, no original box, but has a presentation wood box...and grip has been cobbled up with "red".
Professional looking engraving of "red" but I'm sure it didn't come from S&W that way. Store has no idea as to history as they bought from a 3rd party. Any idea of the year of manufacture? Also a guess as to value? Store wants $670 (which I think is a shade high). sorry about the bad pic...cell phone, poor lighting, and the store was closing for the weekend.

It's too bad about the grips but at that price who cares... The grips are easier to replace than any other part of the gun.

thanks...I my go back...the store was closing Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday (July 4)...I can check Tuesday. I love the way an N frame shoots. In fact I know a retired Ohio Highway Patrolman that carried one for duty and still carries every day.

That would easily bring $750-$800 in my neighborhood.
Stocks issue is easily resolved with a replacement set.
Or since they've been hacked for a guy named RED, could be re-purposed with an inlay of S&W
.

"RED"...........that's the color my rear end would be if I went back on Tuesday and it was gone. Down here $675 for a 27-2 in good condition is a pretty good deal! That would bring $800 to $900 dollars on one local gun board I haunt.

I buy guns to shoot. I'm not much a collector except a collector of guns to shoot. If I had a Winchester Model 71 in pristine condition, I'd hunt with it. I have a Sako that used to have a beautiful stock. A few Rocky Mountain hunts have left their marks on its stock. Now I don't care. I care about killing big game. With that out of the way, at the price offered and the condition identified, I'd be all over it. I'm with the hand gunners who know that the Model 27 is the best revolver ever made. And then I'd shoot the heck out of it. I'd even carry it while fishing in black bear neighborhoods. 6 180 grain Partitions or hard cast at max .357 Mag velocity would send a marauding black bear on to wherever mean critters go after they leave this world. At the end of each day wetting lines, I'd wipe it off and get it ready to carry the following day.
Buy it.

If it's a 5", 4", or maybe any inch for that price I'd grab it even if Obama was carved in the grip. But it sure looks 5" to me, which is a big "YES!!".

That's a 5" model. I own 3.5", 4", and 5" models.
The 5" model is, in my opinion, the best balanced of all the Model 27 barrel lengths.
1975 would have been the first year the Model 27 would have been shipped in a display case.
I'd be on that one like ugly on an ape.

Anything under $1,000 is a buy. A five inch to boot your kidding me right?
Ape ugly on it isn't the term I would use but down right freaking quick I'd grab it.
Check the online prices.

You best be standin' at the front door when that store opens. At that price, if it ain't gone by now it will be quick.

I'll add to the chorus that thinks that looks like a 5" barrel which is highly desirable. The single picture is not well focused but it looks like the finish is original, it's pinned and recessed, and looks to be in good condition. The only thing I question is the trigger. Is it smooth? It should be grooved. Assuming it functions well, $670 is probably as good a price as you're ever likely to see from a LGS. Instead of RED the carving in the stock could be R&D (Rita and Doug; Research And Development)? I'd leave it and enjoy it the way it is. Who knows, maybe somebody famous named RED owned it?

Most likely a five inch gun as fours were not cataloged until late in the 70s. I don't even think you could special order a four inch during the that time frame.
That is a darn good deal on an excellent condition 27.

Change the stocks, put the RED set on eBay. There is bound to be a couple of Red's out there that will fight over them.

At that price the grips wouldn't bother me in the least. Very easy to get another set.
RED sure knew how to make a set grips look ugly....

I think the "RED" on the grips is unique and I would be happy to have those grips because of that. Just like used tools that have names engraved on them-they are something someone has used and now those people are passed away. It makes me glad to own them and use them.

Guys...yeah...I just got it. Called the store and they agreed to hold it. Stopped on my way home from work. I've attached pics...not the best...but it is a 5 inch, it has been shot because It needs to be cleaned...but it's not been fired much. The box, I think may be original as is (I think) everything else.

I sure don't see any signs of a refinish. Good close up photos of the side plate, screws and SW logo would help.

I don't think it has been refinished. You can barely see the seam of the sideplate.

Good price. I would ignore the RED as the wood is pretty.
Or just change your name to Red.

The roll marks will be light, with very "soft", sometimes indistinct looking edges, this includes marks on the barrel and S&W logo.
The edge of the sideplate where it mates to the frame will look as though the edges have been rolled (depends on how much the parts were buffed before new finish is applied) and you will see what appears to be a gap between the two, as opposed to what yours looks like now.
Your gun has very sharp rollmarks and the sideplate gap is nonexistent.

OK, so down here in the LS state the most famous "Red" carried the last name of Adair. No need to google it, as I will tell you he was a world known oil well fire fighter. Now your job is to spin the story 'bout how once it was made known you had acquired the gun people reached out to you with stories about how he originally owned her and it had been a gift from the owner of a wild well that Red and his crew extinguished while they ate lunch. Problem solved. And in those days perhaps not out of the realm of possibility. hardcase60
