Default My first Smith (and post)! Model 10-7 PPC

Hey there everyone!

I've been shooting for just a few years now, mostly revolvers, and I finally picked up a Smith. I found this guy in the used gun room at Cabela's of all places - it's a 10-7 that someone set up for PPC. Nice, snappy trigger pull, Aristocrat hardware, etc. Really clean, and definitely a better gun than I am shooter (so far).

I'm actually going to switch over to this guy for ICORE (Limited 6) and just had TK Customs cut it for moon clips. Using moons with the Aristocrat collar causes the brass to rocket out of the cylinder, ha.

Two questions:
- Can anyone help me with age? Serial is 6D44970
- Are those considered "good" grips? I'm going to replace them either way, but it seems like there's a wide range of valuations on "target" style grips.

Probably 1980 on the shipping date.

Your grips are the last style of wood target grips made by the factory. The wood is called Goncala Alves. They may have their own production date ink-stamped on the inside surface. Whether they are "good" or not depends on how they fit your hand when you shoot it, especially double action.

I never saw a nickeled PPC gun on the line when I shot PPC. Stainless was rare then, too. Looks like a great gun.

The proof is to load up some 148 gr. HBWC's and shoot the gun (double action) at 50 yards and see how small a group you can shoot. That's what this gun was designed to do. It should shoot under 2" at 50 yards.

That looks like a Bullseye gun to me, not PPC. Very nice gun. Too bad hardly anyone uses revolvers in the Bullseye game any more. Yup, that gun was made to punch holes in a very tight group @50 yards.

Good call on the grips. The date inside is November 1987 - so it sounds like they were a later addition. They actually don't fit my hand that well and have been replaced with (ironically enough) Goncala Alves Hogue Big Butts.

In terms of the finish... it looks like it was bead blasted at some point? I don't think it's chrome but I could be wrong.

It could very well be Bullseye and not PPC. I got the PPC part from the Gun Library guy who gave me the backstory - evidently it came in as part of a collection sale and supposedly the owner had won two state championships in CA with it. Again, he said PPC, but he could have been mistaken.

It's definitely set up for Bullseye-style target shooting but I'm going to use it as a platform for an action pistol gun. So far, I've had it cut for moonclips, replaced the grips, added an oversized cylinder release, and removed the Aristocrat underlug. It's still heavy but the lack of underlug makes it far more balanced and the grips help me compensate. It's not an obvious choice for ICORE, true, but the action is great and there's just something about older revolvers. I swear they have souls, ha.

Thank you for the welcomes!

Welcome to the FORUM! Congratulations on your 10! Most people don't appreciate these for what they are & what went into making them. I bought a 10-6 in Jan. It is the only 8 & 3/8" barrel one I have seen. I know where it was built and roughly when. I don't have it dialed in yet due to vision circumstances. It does shoot well though. Bob

Nice gun and it looks good two toned. They tend to be a little muzzle heavy but shoot great. I have a 6" Schneider that I use in a double action only fun league at the club. It's off hand (one handed) and is fun. It's 8 weeks and 16 matches, 2 a nite. I prefer the hogue grips, they seem to fit my hand good. Make sure you post a pic in the competition section in the PPC revolver pics thread. Have fun and give,us a range report soon.

Bananaman, are the grips on your gun wood? They look like well made and would fit a hand nicely. See them on Armslist, Larry
