My first classic, 19-3. Manufacture date?
I've always been more of an auto guy but for some reason I got a wild hair for a classic S&W revolver. I started poking around on GunBroker for Model 10's when I stumbled across this Model 19-3. Looked to be in pretty good condition, seller had an A+ rating with a lot of feedback, so I decided to watch it. It ended on July 4th so I thought I might have a decent shot at getting it for a decent price.
I ended up getting it for under $500.
Got it in today and got it stripped down and cleaned out. Side plate screws other than the yoke screw don't look like they were removed much, if at all. Internals look really good other than being a little dirty. Bore looks about perfect. Lockup seems good on all six chambers with just a wee bit of side to side play, although I lack the experience to really judge that. There is a teeny bit of front to back play in the cylinder at full lockup, which is endshake, correct? I'll have to get my feeler gauges out to see just how much.
Front sight is a little buggered up so I'll have to fix that or take it to a gunsmith. I added a set of Ahrends Retro Target Stocks in Goncalo Alves.
Serial number is 2K26XXX. Can anyone advise roughly when it was made? Thanks in advance!

Nice. According to my SCSW, that SN makes it 1971.
From what I can see, a very little cold blue touch-up on the exposed white metal is all I would do. But I might not be seeing what you're seeing.
Congrats on a nice 19. I have a weakness for P&R M-19's too and am working on getting all the nickels.
Jeb
P.S., If you touch-up with cold blue, my experience says keep it confined to white metal. Excessive overrun can damage the existing blue - FYI.

Thank you, sir!
I was hoping for a birth year gun but this is only three years off.

Well, assuming from your user name that 1974 is your "target", the following SN ranges is what I have for that year:
4K54,105 - 4K99,999
5K73,963 - 6K58,917
7K1 - 7K26,043
I hope that's helpful & good hunting.

Thanks again!
What would be the correct front sight for this gun, or is the plain ramp correct/original?

Without the complete serial number no one can say when it shipped. You can guess, but, you can't say it shipped in 1971. I just looked at the serial number and the range of 2K2600 is 1971 to 1973. To quote a date in SWSC is a mistake. If your happy with a guess, so be it. You need a historical letter to pinpoint the date and destination.

The front sight is proper, and not seeing any traces of pin removal, I'm sure it's original too. The Model 19 Combat Magnum is a great revolver. Enjoy.

First –
The SN range is 2K26000, not 2K2600.
Second –
SWCA SN information directly from Roy Jinks states:
2K1 – 2K99999 = 1970 – 72
SCSW states:
2K26XXX = 1971
Lastly -
I was trying to share the best information, that I had knowledge of, with the OP “without” trying to letter the gun. I didn’t expect to suffer a slings & arrows over it, if that’s what the above is.
I am appreciative though. For sometimes, I stupidly lower my guard before human nature and a sharp verbal gauntlet across the smacker reminds me to wisely raise it again. Thank you Sir - for that.
