38 special CTG mod 10-7 hammer won't stay cocked back ?
Received a 38 S&W Special CTG. Mod 10-7 and the hammer won't stay cocked back. Is this normal, or is something wrong with the gun? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Welcome to the Forum.
Is this a police or security trade-in? Some were modified to double action only.
If you own proper, hollow ground gunsmithing screwdrivers, you can remove the sideplate and look inside. Otherwise, take it to a gunsmith.

Yep; likely modified. If it's a snub/carry type one I'd probably not worry about it.

If it has been converted to double action only you might want to have the hammer bobbed also. If you accidentally cock the gun with a loaded round and release the hammer you will be in for quite the surprise.

Hopefully, his finger won't be on the trigger.

By all means, take it to a gunsmith and put your mind at ease.

I agree on all counts. It's apparently a DAO, you should get it checked to be sure it's working correctly, and it is appropriate to bob the hammer on a DAO gun.
Two reasons for bobbing the hammer:
1. You're never going to cock it so the spur is unnecessary and you lose the risk of it snagging on clothing.
2. Without the hammer spur you'll always remember that this is a DAO gun.
I only have one DAO revolver with a bobbed hammer and I like it that way myself.

Only if you are holding the trigger back. That's what that sliding bar of metal, under the sidplate, does.

Could be a badly botched trigger job also. Search the condition known as "push off" which is considered dangerous. Gunsmith should inspect the gun.

We have also seen a large number of revolvers where the hammer wouldn't stay cocked in SA when they were supposed to do so.
Most that were no altered were guns that had been dropped and the hammer spur BENT!

If you do have the hammer bobbed, leave a bit of spur so you can check the cylinder for free rotation, by pulling the hammer back a bit. This unlocks the cylinder so you can rotate it by hand to check for binding. OTHERWISE, you have to pull the trigger back a bit--not the best method, for obvious reasons.
