Default Model 60 Born On Date

I just purchased a model 60 with this serial r119913.

Could someone enlighten me on its mfgr date and would the gun be the 119,913th model 60 produced?

Thanks!

Welcome! The SNs on model 60s started in the low 400,000 range in 1965 and many more were made to 1969, when the R prefix started. I doubt anyone (even at the factory, who would not keep records like this) could tell you who has the 119,913th one made, but it was before yours. Enjoy!

Probably very early in 1970. The 1969 serial numbers went to about R30,000.

Lists are compiled over time by various collectors. They are based on factory shipping records and, to a lesser extent, known factory information recorded in the extant notes of various employees and floor supervisors. The standard reference guide is the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. The Third Edition has been out for some time and can be purchased. Publication of the Fourth Edition is expected very soon. Serial number lists included in that volume are close approximations in most cases, but are not exact.
