I'm really starting to like the N Frame revolvers. 75Vette will be glad to hear this for sure. Except for hunting (deer and pig around here), they have always been just too big. I guess if I was a giant, they would be the only guns for me. For the size of my hand, it has become apparent that grip selection is critical. It is fun swapping around grips until you get it right. This little selection of 4 of them shows where I am to date. The KB Ropers had to go on the long barrel M28-2. They are just all wrong on a shorter barrel gun. The original Magna grips are the only way to go on the M27-2. Combats on the M29 really work well. The M28-2 with the 4 inch barrel will likely be resolved with another pair of Magna Grips. Targets are terrible on all of them. Presentation Targets are the worst. I'm about to get it right. Another Smith & Wesson presentation box is on the way for the loose gun. It's just laying there for now.

Factory grips suck. Ever since S&W discontinued Cokes they have approached grips as if they are at best an afterthought. Instead, think of grips as a "user interface" between you and the gun. They are the easiest aspect of the gun to change in order to make the gun behave and perform as you need it to. Remember, Elmer Keith had tiny little hands, and Skeeter Skelton's weren't much bigger. Both carried and used N frames very, very well. But each spent the time and trouble to find just the right grip to benefit their size hand and method of shooting. On all my combat square frame N frames I use Spegel checkered extended Boot Grips.




On my hunting N frames, I use Culina's Checkered Classics which copy the original Cokes, and in fact improve upon them.

I been buying the n frame Thailand grips ans saving the orginal grips from harm. I also purchase grips friends m the S&W store too.

Good start on the N frame collection your missing the m58 & m57 in 41 magnum but give it time.

I know. I had the 41 magnum. It was my first one back in 1973. You couldn't find the 44 after Dirty Harry. I sold it in 1975 to finance the down payment on my first house. I later got the 44 and 45 Long Colt. Sold them too. I actually bought the little stainless steel 44 magnum with the 2.5 or 3 inch barrel and combat grips around 1985ish. Hard to shoot. Traded it my son. He sold it a few years later. I wish I had that snub 44 back. . .never seen another. It was something special I got from an LGS that always managed to get in the guns nobody else could get their hands on.

I do love my N frames, but their permanent residence is in my safe. Here are pics that I've posted before of my only N frames. First a 4 inch Md 29-2 from ca. 1970 and my two Pre Md 27s. The one in nickel was shipped in 1950 and the blued one was shipped in 1956.

I guess I'm just a K and L frame kind of guy. With the proper grips they just seem perfect for my average size hand. And my best shooting is always with a K or L frame. And to be honest, my favorite shooters are L frames.

I like the longer barrels starting with the 4" barrel and up to 10.5".

I have hogue grips on my 1955 and they fit me perfect. but I do have big hands. I like the 6.5 inch barrel length. seems to make the gun feel very balanced and easy to hold steady for me

Brother, I'll take every pair you have. For me they are wonderful.

I have always liked N frames. I only manage to have 3 though. 25-15, 28 no dash, and 625JM. JM is a lot of fun to shoot. Have made a few changes to it. Thank goodness, I have my K's, + L's. Bob

After some trading I wound up with a 629-5 4". I had been reloading and wanted to play with a big bore. Really got to like that revolver, especially after pulling off the finger bump Hogue grip and replacing it with a no finger bump Hogue. I don't have overly large hands (wear size large gloves) and was surprised how well the N frame fit me.
Was offered a 21-4 thunder ranch for a old Beretta 92F I had and couldn't say no. The stock wood grips look all wrong but are great once in the hand. Fun shooter but I'm starting to have a hard time seeing the black on black notch sights.
Made a big mistake by shooting a 627 when offered. Had to have one! So...



Pic is before I added a Dawson F.O. front sight. The Houge wood was a Ebay deal and I really like it. I guess I do like N frames!

Somehow I keep going back to the N frames too.

I'm glad to see you coming around Doc!! Yes I do love my N frames. I have large hands so they just naturally feel better. I have and carry J, K & L frames for SD but for sheer fun at the range I take my 44s. I feel kinda bad that the K & Ls have been neglected as of late. I should plan on a "357" day at the range so they can have some fun too.
I'm anxious to see what you add to your collection next!!

Don't You Ever Wash That Thing

This thread has some admirable collections, as well as some extremely good photos!

I have one N Frame, this 629-4. It's one of my favorite revolvers, and was a grail gun since about 1979. I'm glad I didn't get one for a while, since I lucked out with a -4, and that was before I knew anything about the improvements. That grip is Hogue, Goncalo Alves, Round to Square. Well, somewhat square. True RB's look out of place with a 6" barrel, IMO.

However, I have a cool N Frame story. I was 10, and went shooting with my dad and his friend Tom. Dad brought a couple rifles, but Tom brought a Model 1917, a big can of ammo, and a bunch of half moon clips. I got to shoot it as much as I wanted, but it was my job to keep the clips filled with live ammo, for all of us. This was the second handgun I had shot, the first being my dad's H&R .22 revolver. That was my intro to the S&W N Frame!

Like many have said, the N-frame is a bit big for my hands. But I do like the calibers they're chambered for. I do love me some big bore wheelguns. And .357s, and 38/44s and...
So yeah, I have a few N-frames around here.

My 629-1 with original stocks but they're to large for my hands. So I went to the Hogues for comfort.
