Need manufacturing date
I have the chance to by a 686 6" no dash with serial number AAA051x and would like to know the date of manufacture. Also the label says the grips are code ST and not sure the ones on the gun are factory grips. I wish I would have taken a photo of the grips but I got so excited for this gun to join my collection

It's an early one; 1980.

Most likely a Jul/Aug 1981 ship date. Stocks should be target with speedloader cutout. Don't forget the pics when you get it. We like pics, in case you didn't know

ST would indicate Square Target stocks.
Next time you look at the box, make a note of the SPEC ORD number. 99% of the time that is the day of manufacture.
The first digit in the SPEC ORD number is the last digit of the year and the remaining three digits are the day in Julian format. So you do have to know what decade the revolver came from, in this case the 1980s

Hello there - looking to purchase my first Model 28. The shop has a 28-2 N6249 that I am looking at. Can anyone help me with what year it is from.
Also - it has smooth wood grips with no checkering, I read they are presentation grips. Was that normal and / or what is the upside / downside if any?
Sorry, no photos yet as it is still at the store

Odds are those are not the grips that your revolver shipped with unless it was some kind of special order.
That serial number would put it right around 1970/1971

Thank you Colt! I called S&W and they confirmed 1970-1972 manufacture.
