Smile New to me Highway Patrolman...Next to the Last, Almost Final Update, Sept. 10th, 2016

This afternoon I got a call from a LGS friend of mine. He had just taken in a "well used" Smith and Wesson 28-2. He generally knows that I am interested in older Smiths and sometimes Colts, and asked if I would like to see it. Well, I drove over and it was by no means pristine, but not abused in anyway. It came with an older tan Smith and Wesson holster, marked 21 and 34, and a cartridge belt made by the "Idaho Leather Co.", of Boise Idaho, item #162, and a box of 38 spls, a brand new Safariland cleaning kit, and a bottle of Hoppes No 9.

Here it is as I first saw it:

Anyway, he was asking $525 (plus we have a 6% tax here), for the whole deal, and I frankly told him that I thought that was a little high, and that I wasn't really in the market for another N frame anyway. But I had just read a couple of threads on the forum about Highway Patrolmen that folks either wanted, or had just bought, and I was interested.

After we dickered a little, I told him I would give him $475.00 for the whole package, if he would pay the tax. He agreed, and it followed me home. Everything is tight on this revolver. No push-off, no end shake, all 6 chambers are timed perfectly, and the stocks number to the gun. Trigger pull in both single and double action are great, and it looks like one of those revolvers that have been carried a lot, and shot not so much. Bore and chambers are pristine.

Here is another shot of it. At this point, I have not even wiped the gun down, let alone cleaned it:

After I clean it up, and shoot it a little, I'll post some more pictures.

Anyway, here is my question: did I pay too much? I figure that the tax, holster, belt, ammo, cleaning kit, and Hoppes are probably about $75.00, so I have around $400. In the gun itself.

Let me know what you think, and I'll get back with some more photos after I give it a gentle cleaning with a little extra fine bronze wool and oil.

By the way, all of my reference material is at the office. The serial number is N7954. Can anyone give me a rough ship date on this?

Thanks for looking....

Best Regards, Les

You did very well. I'd have dropped $500 on that combination in a heartbeat. Of course, I am very partial to the 4" HP. One of them was the first S&W I ever owned and I've lost track of how many I've actually had over the years since then. Exceptionally fine guns to carry and shoot.

Yours looks great in that rig!

N7954 (only four digits) would very likely be 1970, the first year of the N prefix.

Sorry I didn't notice your question the first time I posted.

Jack:

Thanks, for the date!!! That fits with the story that my friend at the LGS told me. Of course, I know to buy the gun, not the story, but this seemed straight forward enough. The guy who sold this rig said that he had bought the gun new over 40 years ago, and he really didn't want to sell, but had to to raise funds. Even though it is a little dirty, it is actually cleaning up better than I thought it would.

Since I'm picking everyone's brains tonight, the walnut stocks number to the gun, and are in pretty good shape, but they appear exceptionally oil darkened. (And I mean gun oil, not the kind that is sometimes used to finish wood, like ting oil). Does anyone know of a way to leach some of the gun oil out of the wood without damaging the wood, to keep it looking a little lighter? I don't want to do anything to damage the wood.

Best Regards, Les

I think you did good, A nice shooter N frame for roughly 400.00. I think you will be very happy with the HP. I have 1 in 6". Been sniffing around lately, trying to get a 4". You'll take her to the range and have a blast !! Great shooting revolver.

Nice Pick Up !!

Well, the conventional wisdom round here is most any N frame in good condition is worth $400... So you did good. Personally, I would have gone $500 on that package with a smile.

I had read your thread on the 28-2 and one other one (the guy trying to buy his BIL's 28), recently, which had me thinking about this model. I'm mostly an "I" and "J" frame guy, with only one "L" frame, and until today, only 3 or 4 "N" frames. But the coincidence of reading about, and thinking of this model, and then someone calling me from out of the blue, and offering me one, made me think that I was supposed to buy this gun. On top of that, if my Mom were still alive, today would be her birthday. Well, that probably didn't factor into my buy, but I was thinking of it off and on all day.

Best Regards, Les

Les,
You might try some Murphy's Oil Soap on the stocks.

Talking

$400 and you're wondering if you got a deal... You must be kidding

Acetone will removing the oil on the stocks along with out harming the wood. Unforntunately it will remove any finish it touches also. I'm guessing anything that would remove oil will also remove the finish on the stocks. If you don't mind refinishing the stocks it's not a big deal and rather easy to do if you've ever stained or finished wood before. I've done it before and have no formal training what so ever.

I would have paid that. I like the rig that came with it. The two obviously spent a lot of time together on someone's hip and that appeals to me.

Clean and lube the gun. Clean and oil the leather. Shoot it, and hang it on the hat rack.

If you regret it, you overpaid.
If you're happy (you should be) then you didn't overpay.

les-

That gun deserves better leather. I'd look around for a nice used Bianchi or Safariland rig. The holster would be the Model 5BHL in Bianchi or Model 25 or 29 in Safariland, and you ideally want the basketweave stamping and soft leather lining. I carried revolvers in such holsters for years with very minimal wear to the guns' finishes, and the overall quality of the leather is quite a bit better than what S&W sold. I regard S&W holsters as being about minimal acceptable quality. I think they were bought out by Gould & Goodrich.

If you can afford new leather, the models recommended are virtually duplicated by El Paso Saddlery. I also have their products, which are top notch.

Nice!

No, you certainly didn't pay too much!

I'm "in between" Model 28's right now. I'd love to find a deal like that one!

About a year ago, I gave $500 for a 28 without original stocks and no accessories. It was in somewhat better condition than yours, but I vote good deal on your purchase! Just my opinion, but I wouldn't mess witht he stocks. They look fine to me.

The belt is made by the "Idaho Leather Co.", of Boise Idaho, item #162. I have never heard of them, but the leather is supple and heavy, and it seems to be in good shape, but you can tell that it has been worn a lot.

Also, should you be so inclined, they make excellent platforms for conversion to .45 Colt!

The top one I converted many years ago (what's up with that bluing??!!) and the lower one is a Bowen conversion, regulated with a higher front sight of his design.

The 28 is a very popular revolver. They always command high prices. I think you got a bargain!

I like it better than the 27, as I think the finish holds up better in real-life use, than the high polished blue on the 27. Not there's anything wrong with that. But if it's going to be a shooter, a tool, than I'd rather have the 28. It will give you a lifetime of reliability. Enjoy!

Why is everyone obsessed(dare I say neurotic) with this notion of paying too much, and worrying about it after the fact. You wanted it,you negotiated for it,and you paid the number.I think that makes it worth it to you, unless you're looking to flip it tomorrow.....No one held a gun to your head.

Oh come on! I think les.b just asked the questions to start a conversation on his new purchase! And it was a fair price, always fun to have another gun!

You are right, I was just having some fun, and sharing with my friends here on the forum. I'm not at all obsessed with whether I paid too much, Camster, I am pretty sure that it was a fair price, and this was just a way to share my find with you guys. Also, I have learned a few things, like a possible ship date, and gotten some helpful suggestions from you guys. Just enjoying one aspect of our shared passion for all things S&W, and trading knowlege.

Thanks to all of you for sharing your collective wisdom with me, and taking the time to take a look at my newest acquisition.

Best Regards, Les

Tim:

Those are interesting conversions of the 28, and I'm pretty sure that they would be great revolvers as a result. The second one is really a beautiful job, particularly with those super grips!!!

Thanks for sharing, and taking the time to view the thread!!

I was really just trying to start a conversation, and get to see some of the other treasures that my fellow S&W guys have, and learn a bit in the process. I have no argument with you, and appreciate your comments in the spirit that you gave them. Sure, we all like a pat on the back now and then, especially since we are apparently a dying breed in America, it seems that there are fewer and fewer Americans who would even know what a Highway Patrolman even is!!

Update:

Well, I spent some time yesterday with the extra fine bronze wool and some gun oil, removing almost minuscule rust specks on my new treasure. The only really bad spots were on the right hand side of the trigger, where a right handed shooters finger would rest when shooting. I didn't overdo it here, just enough to stop the spread of rust and stabilize it, as there are still traces of case color there.

I'm still here at the cabin, so my shop tools aren't here, but I couldn't resist taking a peek under the hood. This evening I took a look inside. I do have a few tools here, a few good Grace screwdrivers to keep from damaging the sideplate screws. This gun may have been made in 1970, 46 years ago, but after I used some CLP and a toothbrush and a few q-tips and scrubbed out years of powder fouling and congealed lubricant, it looks like it was made yesterday, except they don't make them like this anymore.

Here it is partially disassembled, and beginning to scrub up the innards. Please forgive the ****** iPad photos:

Here it is with the parts cleaned and lightly lubed, and ready to put the lid on:

And here it is assembled. As you can see, there is some finish wear at the muzzle and sharp edges, and more wear on the cylinder, but there is almost all of the case color on the hammer, and only the rust stains on the right side of the trigger. All in all, this should make a great shooter, and one that I won't be afraid to shoot, either!!

Just thought that some of you who were interested in my purchase yesterday would like a follow up. Next up: I will post a shooting report soon.

Thanks for dropping by, and thanks for all the friendly advice,

Best Regards, Les

I'll agree with JP@AK's age estimate - I have N8023 as a 4" .44 Special conversion. Congrats on a terrific score !

Well, this is a very "Mini" shooting report, but even though I didn't have much time today, plus it's hot and humid, I wanted to make sure that my new aquision actually fired. Fired 5 rounds each: Federal .357 magnum 158 gr JSP; my .38 special 158 gr hard cast Keith SWC handload with 3.0 gr of Bullseye; and .38 factory 158 gr RNL Magtech. All from 15 yards.

Here is the target from the Federal 158 gr .357 JSP:

So at least we know that it works!!

Probably a good thing they didn't send me to Rio, though, not exactly Olympic quality shooting here. I figure that any defects are in my aging eyes. Funny how the size of the sights and their sharpness has changed over the years!!!

Thanks for all the comments suggestions and help with this mini project of mine!!

Best Regards, Les

I think it will be just that!! Thanks for your kind comments. I see that you are from Western PA... We're practically neighbors. Do you by any chance belong to the Pennsylvania Gun Collector's Association (PGCA)? And if so, do you ever attend their shows in Pittsburgh? I have been a member since the early 80s, I think, and used to go to every show, still keep up my membership, but don't go to all the shows. They were great back when they were at Monroeville. I sure have bought a lot of guns there over the years, and sold a few also. Mostly regretted the selling. Last gun I sold there was a Colt SAA blued 4 3/4" with factory Ivorys. 44-40, with an extra cylinder in 44 special. Only gun I ever sold that my girl ever gave me the devil over. I've regretted it ever since.

Best Regards, Les

Default Model 28

Les,
Love the 28 you picked up. 4 inch N frame in classic leather you just can't beat it. Of all my hand guns my model 28 goes with me more than any other. Congrats

Jackcpat:

I can see why. I have a nice 27 3 1/2" with Ivory grips on it and in really nice almost new condition. But I probably won't carry it through the brambles and lay around the woods with it. This 28 already has a few finish flaws and wear, and is still in great shooting shape. I can carry it anywhere. I'm basically a "J" frame guy though, for the last 15 years or so, so I'm going to have to get used to a little weight!

Best Regards, Les

For anyone monitoring this thread, and interested in Model 28s...Highway Patrolman revolvers, there is a long running thread, which in my ignorance, I just found today: The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges and it is an amazing assemblage of HP lore. Highly recommended. It is now at something like 40 pages, and I am trying to work my way through it. Very interesting historically for listing of serial ranges, variations, numbers produced, beautiful photography (not counting mine).

Best Regards, Les

Paul:

That is an absolutely beautiful Highway Patrolman!! I think those grips look great with that finish. Great photography too. Thanks for sharing with us. That's a great angle to show it off.

I've been reading some of the other threads on this gun. I love this forum. It is (as I have said before) like graduate school for Smith aficionados.

As you know, my new 28 is sort of a project gun. I'm having a great time with it, but I'm back to teaching now, and it's cutting into my play time!!

Best Regards, Les

Well, this is turning into a project gun. Who would've guessed? Due to the generosity of a fellow forum member who noticed the sad state of the right hand side of my trigger, I now have a new trigger, and a "S&W" brand grip adapter as well. Here are a few pictures of this little project.

The old trigger in place:

New trigger and grip adaptor donated by fellow forum member:

New trigger installed, with the sideplate still off:

Model 28-2 with new trigger and grip adapter in place. I think that it was a simple and effective solution to a cosmetic problem, and the grip adapter provides my favorite feel in a revolver grip. I wore Tyler T Grips on both of my service revolvers during my 22 year Law Enforcement career, and I am most used to this "feel".

My most sincere thanks go out to fellow forum member "Weatherby", whose generous karma made this project possible!!!

Best Regards, Les
