I just bought my first Smith & Wesson and I already love it.
It's a 66-1 and was curious of the year of manufacture.
Serial Number 32K5578.

Welcome to the forum. We love 66s, and just about anything else made by S&W. We also love pictures!!! Take a pic and post it here. We like to admire the fine products of Smith and Wesson!!! The 66 is a fine revolver, I have two that I carried for the 22 years I was a Police Officer, a 4", and a 2 1/2". They were issued to me in the 1970s, and have served me well for the years that I worked in uniform and plainclothes.

The seller said it received a trigger job. I believe him, it is very smooth and light. It shoots like a dream. I love it. I'm going to carry it everyday. Can anyone narrow it down to a specific model year?

Well, there are folks here who can, my reference works, such as "The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson", or SCSW, are at my office right now, and if no one comes along in the meantime, I'll see what I can find tomorrow. There are also threads here on the forum which help find the ship dates of different smiths. If I can get a link for you I'll paste it here later.

Ok, thank you so much! It's not pertinent information to add value to me. It's a definite upgrade from my previous EDC (Rossi 461, 6 shot, 357). As I have stated, I already love it.

Your gun was made in 1978/79. It's a great gun -- yet I suggest you hang on to the Rossie 461. It's smaller and lighter than the Model 66 and the newer 461/462s (made in the last 2 or 3 years or so since Rossi contracted with Taurus) are very well made.

Wow, a 2 1/2 Model 66-1, now that's the way to start collecting S&Ws. I can see many more in your future.

Congratulations! And welcome to the forum. Yes, a great start! I've been buying S&Ws for almost 40 years and still don't have a Md 66...but I'm pretty picky.

The Mod-19 2.5", hands down, is the optimum choice. The SS guns all ways reminded me of a Snap On wrench. All it is ,is SS. There is no blue beauty to the gun. No beauty. You know Im right, so do not disagree with me.

Well... There is utility to the SS, as in being out every day for twenty years, in rain and snow, sweat in the summer and zero temps in the winter, and knowing absolutely that your sidearm will perform.

But wait! There's More!!! (As the TV salesman tells us)

I was raised to believe like you, Mike, that nothing is as beautiful as blue steel and walnut.

So there is only one solution to this dilemma: buy and own both!! I have, for example, my sturdy, utilitarian 66 4", and its handsome brother the 4" model 19!!! I have a model 63 kit gun, nice to tote on the trout stream, as it doesn't mind a dunking now and then, but I also have my lovely model 34 blue steel and walnut cousin, which is much more glamorous!!!

There you go, Aaron!!! You seem to be standing at the brink of a never ending quest for the ultimate in fine firearms!!!

Guess what? The forum here is the ultimate home of Smith and Wesson "enablers"!!!

There is no utility to them at all. The young kids are just to darn lazy to come home and wipe and oil the gun down. They did not have a Dad that was a War vet. You know Im right. I have had 66s & 67s . and sold the poop out out of them at the shops. No beauty, none.

Well, Mike, I sort of agree with you to an extent. I love my blue steel firearms. I grew up in a family of vets, and my dad didn't have a lot of money, but we had a choice number of blue and walnut firearms, and my folks helped me get my first firearms (I had to earn the money, but they would order them or buy them until I was old enough). So I see where you are coming from. When I was in the service we still had old fashioned walnut and parkerized steel firearms, although they were starting to issue the plastic rifles.

But when I started in police work in 1975, my department had standardized on the model 66, and either in the 2 1/2" or 4" version, that is what I carried for 22 years. I never left it dirty over night though, I had been raised to know better. They served me well for those years, but I admit that I would have preferred the blue steel version, the 19, just becUse I'm a traditionalist. I think they are handsome firearms, and almost all of my firearms are blue steel and walnut, although I do have some blue steel sporting ivory. Which I also think is quite handsome.

I certainly respect and understand your point, but I probably won't sell my stainless guns, as I have a new "No Sell" rule in effect on all my guns. Every time I've sold a gun, at some point in the future, I've come to regret it. Well, except for that IL Smith, I will never own another internal lock smith. I thought I could learn to live with one, and every time I looked at it I got upset!!

This 66-1 feels, looks, shoots and exudes beauty!!

AND my blued Rossi 461 started to rust quickly after everyday sweaty carry. I work outside...
I did a nice Duracoat job on it to help. I can't even wear nice watches, something in my body says "foreign object, destroy!!"

I WILL carry this 66-1 everyday, it's practical and beautiful, to me;-)

I'm gonna throw on a set of slim pearl grip and do my best not to constantly drool or chub, haha.

I'm so sorry you took such a screwing on that revolver. Roll up a $100.00 bill and insert it into the muzzle and ship the Model 66 to me and I will take that embarrassment off of your hands. I'd not do this for just anyone but I like you. It will be our secret.

Blued steel and wood are beautiful, no doubt about it. I love them.

And stainless just works, and works, and works.

My EDC is stainless. Looks fine to me.

Yours is a very nice one, and damn sure not devoid of beauty.
