Price of K-frame Grips?
I recently picked up a 1980 P&R Nickle 19. I want to get a set of original target grips. When I see these used they are around $100-$150. Is there something different about them from the ones S&W is selling on their website for $82 new?

The grips S&W sells today at their store are recently-manufactured aftermarket laminated grips of various types. The originals are S&W-produced real wood stocks, hence the high prices they get today.

Going rate for a nice original set is $50-75 with careful shopping.

Your choices in wood type can also affect pricing.

I bought these on here a few years ago. They were being sold as take offs from a 586 RB. They appear to be laminate. Is this what they are selling on the S&W website?

Altamont is making S&W stocks/grips. Look nice, but don't feel the same. I have found nice older sets on ebay. Be patient. Bob

I've gotten several sets of original target stocks from the 70's-80's for 50-75.00 on Ebay.
Now, if you start talking diamond inserts Magna's or Targets...all bet's are off.

Dave686,
Are you looking for speedloader or football relief for the model 19?
PM me your email address and I can send you some photos of a couple sets I have.

I've seen a nice set of K frame original targets bring up to $200 . I have several sets and have made it a point to keep them. When I sold a revolver that had a set , I removed them before selling it as I knew they were expensive to replace . I go to quite a few gun shows and hardly ever see a set . N frames are a little more common . The newer ones from smith are not at all like the old ones .
An employee told me that it was a contract item with a local cabinet maker for many years . He even furnished the special screw . When he retired , that was the end of those wonderful grips . Good luck on finding a nice set .

Current S&W grips might actually be better quality.but they wouldn't be identical to the originals. For one thing, they're thinner. Some are still solid wood,I think? or are they all laminate now?
I think 75-95 should get you a set of nice originals.
For the $100+ money, you might as well abandon the notion of originality, and go for the superior grips of Culina or Nill.

The new S&W grips produced by Altamont look sort of nice at first glance but when compared to the original Goncalo Alves or Walnut grips - they take a back seat.
The other thing that is different is the actual grip dimensions. The Altamonts are thinner and longer front to back and don't fill my hand as well. Of course that might be different for your hands.
The Altamonts are nicely finished and some may like them but to me they are not something that will take the place of the originals.

Check out the Want to Buy Section
I did that a few months ago for a newly purchased SW 19-4 to get original grips. Got a very nice set. They feel right in my hands - just like they used to back in the day!!

... as do the corresponding guns in very good plus condition. Heck, thee grip screws now cost more than I used to pay for a set of original grips 20 - or was it 20some years? - ago.
