Well, that's a PR shot for sure. The gun isn't loaded, and no one in the area, including the "shooter", is wearing ear protection. They're all just standing around.

I'd like to see what is in that holster back left as well.
I was 12 back at that time. She would have been a good crush.

Well the gun isn't really the center of attention, here.

OMG, that hair! I remember those early 70s hairstyles. I still shudder in embarrassment that we considered those attractive.

For me, her hair would not be a romantic impediment of any kind.

Walter, I thought so, too, but if you go to the source photo, and blow it up, you will see that the blade part of the sight is the same shade of gray as the background, but there is just enough light on the blade to make out the shape. We are the only folks here who are thinking about the gun, apparently.
Best Regards, Les

A woman with a badge in a uniform with a gun and a holster, and hopefully handcuffs. Be still my beating heart... what else matters?

Update on the police recruit in the picture
Nice picture. Have no idea who she is but just typing her name in Google shows she eventually retired from Chicago PD and is currently an Independent Security/Investigative Contractor. Congratulations to her on a long and safe career in law enforcement.

I was wearing ear protectors in 1968. My Uncle Sam "gave" them to me. He supplied some of my friends, too.

Well, it isn't really the same shade, and it isn't that there's just enough light. There's actually too much light. Not that any of this really matters, but the photo was made with a flash on the camera, and it's more than a little overexposed...a lot of the highlights are just totally blown out. Note the almost complete lack of detail on her hands, fingers, uniform shirt, and face...and how the gun looks almost gray instead of blue. Plus the shadow on the wall. But the real dead giveaway is that bright round catchlight in each of her eyes. That says "flash" for sure.

I shot with a police department in the late 70's and we usually had really bad foam plugs. If we did not have them we would put cotton balls in our ears. They only rang for a couple of days. It was an outdoor range which helped.

The revolver can be loaded, and the hair can be let down.
She is hopefully like most of us now and someone's grand parent. Lets hope both the gun and the lady have had a good life and well maintained.

That photo is definitely pure pr as 1974 was the central era when women went into street duty in patrol. As indicated on the patch on the officer's uniform behind her, the "Y" indicates Youth Division where all or most women were assigned until that time. She went on to command level position over the years.

Seriously? What's wrong with it? I see ladies wearing their hair up like that all the time, with the few strategically placed loose tendrils and strands.
It's a look that's still in style. It seems to be favored by a good many female office workers wanting to indicate that they're more focused on work than on looking perfect behind the desk or whatever.
That look, even if it's intentional, tells me that a lady doesn't take herself all that seriously all the time...she likes a little fun.
Her hair looks just fine to me.

Not to mention that the photographer is downrange from her while she is holding and pointing a gun!
As for her age and the era, I'd been back from my second tour in 'Nam for a couple years by this time and had returned to college, prepping for grad school. The lady must have been about my age . . . She, including her hairdo, doesn't look so bad to me!

Well, the pretty lady notwithstanding, The revolver looks to me more like a model 67 with a stainless back sight than a model 15. Course it is a B&W flash photo and my eyes ain't as young as they used to be.

There's a gun in that photo? Back then, we used .38 special cartridges for hearing protection. I stuffed mine with Marlboro filters. Rim end in, they worked pretty well, actually.

Heard from Chris Kolman
I contacted Chris Kolman via Facebook to let her know that after all these years her pic came up in the S&W Forum and I sent her a link to this thread. She thanked me for sending the link and said she joined the S&W forum to view posts but wasn't able to post anything herself yet.
I hope she does eventually post her career history with the PD on this thread. From what she said she in her message to me she had a very successful career in law enforcement and is loving retirement.
Kind of cool that via the magic of the internet, Facebook, and S&W Forum this could happen.
