Default 1967 14-2

Wondering what would be the correct grips for this pistol? I believe that the diamond at the screw went away in 1968, and this should be a square butt frame.

Ouch, thought someone would reply. Just bought this one as I am tired of cleaning the Colt's 357 chambers while shooting 38's. I have never really found a good target (HBWC) or round nose target round in 357 that was accurate. Need to get grips and wanted to confirm that it is a square butt. I have to wait 10 days to get it in hand.. Draconian laws were I live. I think.. that it should have had the diamond Magna's stock, but that is not the main concern. Just the right grips for the frame. Seems the originals are about as precious as grips for a Python..

Yes, all of the Model 14's of the era were square butts. Diamond or not could be correct for your gun as S&W just used what they had then, there is no real cut-off date.

Another option would be Target stocks, checkered walnut, with the "football" shaped extractor relief cut on the left side stock half.

I put a 14-2 on "hold" yesterday. It's probably a little older, the S/N indicates 1964 and it has the diamond magnas (numbered to the gun).

It seems I remember that the diamonds went away about 1968, but I don't think it is/was a hard and fast rule.

I'm a real sucker for the diamond grips for some reason.

On a 14-2 from 1967, diamond Magna stocks are the most likely, non-diamond is possible. If they do have the diamond, they will be the style with the tapered shoulder. Here is a picture:

1967 is kind of a toss-up as to the grips. Diamond or non-diamond could both be considered correct for a K frame of this vintage.

Hi forum,

Congrats on that 14-2. Pics below are my 14-3 w/ 8-3/8" bbl and no diamond Magnas. I got this unfired revolver as you see it, in a wooden case (nicely made but most likely not S & W) and it was wearing a set of Mershon (predecessor to Pachmayr) rubbers. The Magnas were the original grips according to the owners son, and the paperwork reflected same, but the right grip panel has a stenciled number that is not the guns s/n so I really don't know either. I haven't lettered this one ...yet..but it dates to 1967 so maybe S&W was just using up what was on the shelf. I agree about using my 19 or 28 if shooting 357 and the 15 or 14 (or the WWII Victory) for 38's at paper or steel.

Thanks to all,
The gun is#K753+++ so about mid year from what I know. Right now it has the non diamond target Magna's on it. The owner I bought it from has small hands and cut 1/4" off the bottom.. I have very large hands so grips are in order. For now I will probably get the non diamond grips as they are reasonable compared to what I see for the diamond types. Any will now be not original anyway. Also getting a non original (to the pistol) factory box with it. Looking forward to shooting this one, it will have a rough one to compare to however. I also own and shoot a 52-2 but just like revolvers better.

Now I'm scratching my head. Does it have Magna stocks or Target stocks? It can't be both at the same time. One is not the other.

Magna:

I stand corrected, that is what I like about the forum. I LEARN, the stocks are target. I was thinking target and magna was the same thing. The smaller grips I have always thought of as coke bottle..

I am thinking about distinguished revolver, so it has to be stock from what I know. I don't think non diamond targets would disqualify the pistol.

This is the one I spoke of finding a couple of days ago. A -2, the S/N indicates 1964 as the year. These diamond Magna's do number to the gun, but the finish is well worn. I added the BK grip adapter.

If the gun is not a COLLECTOR piece, I would put on it whatever you like the looks and feel of. Stocks are a quick change and can sometimes be found quite reasonably. Bob

I found a pair of what I would call reproductions at a decent price, Target grips with the diamonds and silver S&W medallions. By the looks they are from Thailand. Nice checkering and finish. If I don't like them I will look for originals later.

Well, the seller reneged on the sale and offered it to someone else.. Not a good way to do business. The person didn't show up and the seller then said still for sale. I refused. Good thing to as I found a beautiful pre 14 made in '53. Bought it today. It has the correct diamond target grips as well..
