Default M57 Long Tube Price/Thoughts

Just wanted to get some input from you 41 mag fans about a blued M57 ND 8 3/8" 41 Magnum. On GB I won the above listed gun recently and thought the price was rather low for an N-frame Smith. Some of you might have viewed it.

I placed my bid and to my surprise it held up. Before I disclose my bid, I would like to see what you guys think is a fair price. The seller told me it was hardly shot by his dad who recently passed.

Wooden presentation case included with its insides rotted out like most of them. Unknown if tools and docs are with it. I should have it in a week.

UPDATE--Well I finally got around to taking a pic of the M57 Long Tube. I am really pleased. I guess a deal can be had once in a while.

On a lucky day for a boxed 57 or a -1 $750 as the long barrels don't usually bring as much as the short ones... That said I've seen LNIPC go over $1500 for an mid-1960s with Cokes...

Just depends on what you have..

For $605 I thought I couldn't go wrong, even if it is beat up a bit. I should know by early next week. Like you guys have said, wait until we see it. I will throw up some pics then. I have the 4 and 6 inch that is why I went with the 8

I'd a grabbed that most of the longer barrels now I see are up to $1,500. Once the longer barrels were the unwanted red headed step child. Now there sky high.

I own two of the blue 8 3/8" Model 57s and two of the 8 3/8" Model 657s as part of my 41 Magnum stable

10 year old group photo

The 8 3/8" barreled revolvers were the least expensive 57/357/657 I have bought

That barrel length, in this caliber, just does not seem to bring big dollars.

I am even thinking about doing a 2 5/8" Behlert style snubby conversion to one of the long 57s and re-barrel one of the 657s to a shorter tube

6 or 7 years ago I got one on one of the on line sales from Texas where the guy sold all sorts of things.Advertised as in presentation box and unfired for $500 or 550. When it arrived I was about to call a lawyer. It was in the wooden box,but the flocking had turned into a hard tarry substance and encased the entire revolver except for the Merritt grips. You couldn't budge the trigger, hammer cylinder or latch. After I removed the nonoriginal grips there was a small area of rust on the grip frame!e.I used 2 cans of solvent spray and it shined like a diamond- beautiful black.Everything began to move and the action was unbelievable with a trigger pull everyone wants. The rust surrendered to 4 0 steel wool and Barricade.A pair of S&W Combats hides the blemish. It is amazingly good shooting.I refuse to send it back even though I got screwed out of the original grips.Oh,it is a ,57 no dash.

Sounds like a bit of a project. But definitely a labor of love. Glad it worked out so nice for you.

A month ago I picked up locally a m57 no dash 8-3/8" in almost exactly the condition that you describe, gun hardly been fired, box with marginal hinges and the velvet inside not great. No papers, but has the tools. I bought it for $850 and am very happy with it. By getting it locally their was no shipping and no transfer fees.

Have had several over the years but only have two 8 3/8" 57s at this point. One is a 70s vintage that has been D&Ted for a Leupold scope base. But amazingly enough whoever the smith was who did the work...didn't punch the holes all the way through the topstrap... It wears a 2-6 Bushnell and has never loosened.

The other is a first year of production 1964 vintage gun.. Didn't come with the Cokes but I had a nice set of Nill Retro Cokes that look great on it. It completed my collection of first year 57s...4",5",6", 8 3/8"...and a 58.

Glad you were able to finish your collection...

Bob

Well I picked the M57 up today. It came in the wooden presentation case which is in very good condition. However the felt lining is sh** and needs to be replaced. Wax paper, tools, and docs included.
I can't tell if it has been fired. It appears unfired. I have it torn apart for inspection/lube. It still has packaging grease semi-dried in places. There is not a mark on it except for the turn line on the cylinder. Once I get it put together I will post some pics. Right now I am feeling pretty good about this purchase.

FWIW, I at one time was a 41 freak (well, still am...). At any rate, I had an absolutely NIB 57 no dash 8-3/8 nickel, with tools and presentation case that was like new. I sold it for $950 shipped a couple of years back when the cancer hit. I thought that was fair, and evidently the buyer did as well, as the note he sent me was all but gushing about the revolver.

I would say you did quite well.

Nothing wrong with the long barrel magnums. If you're going to actually use the gun. . .as in hunt with it. . .you want that barrel for added sight radius, velocity, and energy. Most buyers don't really use a handgun. That's why we all sit around lusting after those 2 to 3 1/2 inch examples.

Nice snag and a nice price too! The only unfired safe queen I have is a blued 57-1, 8 3/8th in presentation case with all docs and tools. Don't really know why I haven't fired it yet. I have a nice nickeled 6 incher I shoot along with a Ruger that I use, maybe that's enough. Perhaps it's that 8 3/8th 25-5 that keeps my long tube tooth satisfied. Enjoy that one!
